Unless he can teach Assante to tackle and the 3rd CB to actually cover, why even bother?

If Cowher is that hard up to eat some wings, I can recommend half a dozen places he can visit in NYC after his Sunday CBS gig that would hold their own against Duff’s or The Anchor Bar.

This is Mcdermott insurance, right? The guy has been a head coach for about a decade and he's stepping back to position coach?

Well, we KNOW how well he's "coached" as a HC. Maybe this is the proper degree of demotion for him. Plus, The Fat Man is confident he'll never cut in the buffet line cuz he's a health nut n stuff.

Those guys usually go back to being a coordinator, though. Going back to being a position coach says a lot

Yeah, I've never thought much of Jauron as a coach, but I just assumed he must be relatively talented as a defensive coordinator.
He's been either a head coahc or defensive coordinator since 1994 or something like that. To get busted all the way down to private, I have to imagine he is either ice cold in the NFL or there was an understanding he might have a shot to take over this job in 2011. If he had the option of taking the defensive coordinator job for the Bucs, for example, or take a one year shot at waiting in line for the job with the Eagles, it's plausible he'd take the Eagles since there would still be shitty opportunities out there next year.
More GB connections, though. Reid, Marty, and Jauron were all on Holmgren's coaching staff together. Maybe Gru-dog is coming in as a QB coach.

I'm pretty confident that Gru-dog ain't going anywhere. I think after watching the Bucs fall to crap around him, he needs a few years to get his mind ready to coach again.
Shanny's mistake may be that he rushed back into coaching a year after being canned, though he may be itching to get back in it depending on his personal life. Gruden on the other hand commentated for a year, so he was still around the game, collected a paycheck and seemed fine on TV for the most part. Maybe in the back of his mind he thinks he could be the next John Madden. Who knows.

You know, Lyte, I wonder if more than a year off will really help coaches. Considering how quickly the game evolves, I think the longer the layoff, the harder it will be to keep abreast of things for these guys. I think one year off gives them a chance to rest from the significant time demand they endure, but more than that might hurt them.

Personally I think it comes more down to the coaches. If Dick didn't have Martz, he wouldn't have won a superbowl. Gibbs' problem coming back wasn't that he couldn't coach or get the team going, but because the talent was thrown together and be brought back old coaches that didn't have new ideas.
A HC's main job is to plan and motivate. He's not a schemer, he's a decisionmaker. He decides to pass or run, decides what play he likes, but doesn't have to be the guy who designs the plays. That's what Tuna did so well, motivate and make the calls.

Martz's offense only worked when he had 4 HOF candidates on offense. He didn't match the same success in Detroit or San Fran.
It might be fun, though, to see Cutler make a run at that INT record. They're going to have to think schemes because they don't have the horses to make an offense like that work.

Once a system is taken apart, reviewed, examined and understood, it becomes planned against. That's not saying it can't work, but it's outdated. Martz' system worked a decade ago, and great coordinators (think JJ) were able to constantly plan, change and adjust their system to meet what needed to be done.
My point isn't that Martz is a genius, but that he had something new that people didn't plan against as a OC and that propelled Dick to a championship with his motivational skills and organizational patterns. Martz isn't a genius now because he hasn't adjusted plans and schemes to become an adapter. However, back then, he was the linchpin in getting Warner to success and crafting a team. Good teams comprise of not just good coaches but great coaching staffs, from top to bottom. Martz is experienced at working with QB's and could correct Cutler's issues. Or not. We've seen coordinators go to HC positions, go back as coordinators and fail or fly at various teams. A lot of that like Bass said comes also with the talent there. However, if a poorer coaching staff was running St. Louis that year, you wouldn't even remember who Kurt Warner was, outside of some footnote like He Hate Me.

I hate to sound contrary, but. . .
Martz designed a brilliant, precision timing system that worked really well with Trent Green, Kurt Warner, and a completely healthy Marc Bulger at the helm. The drawback of the system is that it depends upon a highly accurate, strong armed, confident passer who has enough rapport with his wideouts to recognize the wide receiver adjustments on the line, since wide receiver option routes only varied by the depth of the cut. Also, because the routes take time to develop. Therefore, a good offensive line is critical.
Now, show me a team with that good of a QB, and that good of an offensive line, and my bet is that they'll execute any offense effectively. However, Martz's system would likely to enable them to achieve more, taking them from merely great to stellar.

I think the MArtz offense has been outed and he could fix it, but he doesn't have the humility to do so.
As Bass said, his offense worked when he had Bruce, Warner, Holt, Marshall Faulk, and Pace all in their prime.
He made it work with other QBs to a lesser extent, but we're talking about 5 sure-fire HOF players out of 11 on an offense...all in their prime.
For all his offensive genius, let's keep it real...
1999: #1 Offense
2000: #1 Offense
2001: #1 Offense
2002: #13 Offense
2003: #9 Offense
2004: #6 Offense
2005: #9 Offense
2006: #22 Offense
2007: #19 Offense
2008: #23 Offense
That doesn't mean the guy can't sceme his face off...everyone seems to agree that he can. His system (IMO) is just too one dimensional and requires too many superstars to be at its best. Plus, his short stays in his last couple stops and his repuation in St. Louis lead me to believe he's a massive pain in the ass.

Are there anymore HC openings still? Yahoo has some rumor that Cowher is likely to take any offer to coach that comes his way, but I'm trying to think what's still open.
