Eagles OTA / Training Camp thread

Guess with another wk of OTAs taking place, and the team reconvening again Tuesday, may as well get a thread rolling right up to camp.

There figures to be some interesting position battles and players to watch.

I saw this article today (linked below) but these 1st few paragraphs really stood out.
I had NO IDEA Douglass called Winston Justice out publically like this, or that Justice was aware of it.

Hugh is supposed to be up at camp today.

"WINSTON JUSTICE knows what Hugh Douglas thinks of him, knows what people less brazen than Douglas have been saying behind his back since last Sept. 30.
"If they don't bite when they're puppies, they're not going to bite when they're grown dogs,'' Douglas, the former Eagles Pro Bowl defensive end, said over the phone last night, repeating what he has said about Justice on WIP-610 AM's Morning Show. "It just doesn't look like he has any fight in him. If you look at his demeanor, it's like he's not even a football player.''

Justice said yesterday he has never spoken to Douglas about his opinion, and doesn't plan to speak to him about it. Douglas, by the way, said he plans to attend today's session of the Eagles' minicamp for rookies and select veterans, which this week includes Justice, the third-year offensive tackle.

"There's nothing I can really say,'' Justice said. "The only thing I can do is prove it [isn't true] by my actions . . . There's no need to say anything to him. He's not the only one who thinks that. This [season] is my chance to prove him wrong.''

Also, hold the orders on the "I Heart Bill Sampy" 700level.com T-Shirts for our Lehigh Tailgate:

Wide receiver Bill Sampy suffered what looked like a serious left ankle injury yesterday, when he and safety Therrian Fontenot collided while pursuing a pass. Sampy, hampered last season by a persistent quad injury, left the field on a cart.

Justice should be more like Hugh. Have a couple good years then rob a team for millions like he did the Jags. A shining example to all young players.

Fuck Hugh. His IQ is the same as plant life.

One guy I'm looking forward to seeing out there is JR Reed. Guy was a battering ram in the second half of the year when he got a chance to play. Safety looked like a huge hole on the team coming into camp, but if it's a matter of taking a couple years til Reed gets healthy, and if last year showed he was on the path, then he might be an unexpected force in the backfield this year, and safety coule be a position of depth if B-Dawk can raise his level of play. I'm interested in how he's progressing.

Excellent- absolutely.
I was comprising a short list of guys i wanted to see/watch and some of the position battles etc, to post after some got a chance to comment on Justice.

JR Reed was at the top of that list. I feel exactly as you do regarding him.

I think Reed is only 50/50 to make the team, honestly.

I think he had a pretty solid career in front of him before the injury, and he had a nice game against the Pats last year, but I can't see him ever getting "better" since he's been completely healed for some time.

As far as Hugh goes, I can't fault him for his opinion. I'm not writing Justice all the way off and I hope he can make something of himself, but what are the odds right now? I'd say they are stacked against him. He hasn't shown much in limited action over 2 years and what he has shown is mostly negative. It would appear he's better suited to play RT, but I'm not sure he's strong enough for that side of the field.

I can't fault Hugh...he was a force and a good team leader for the Eagles. He had 4 healthy years with the Eagles in his prime (and missed one season with an injury). During those 4 years he had 50 sacks and 8 forced fumbles, not counting the playoff numbers and breaking Jim Miller in half after a pick in that playoff game against the Bears (which was hilarious).

I think he's also top top 50 all-time in sacks and among the top 25 or so DEs.

Pretty impressive career and a likable guy, so I can't bury him for his WIP personality.

I agree that Reed did some nice work at the Safety position last year and I'm interested to see how he does in camp this year.

Unfortunately, from Spuds' article today it sounds like the FO is already trying to prep the masses for the return of "Backpack" Considine. Spuds says he envisions a Safety foursome of Dawk, Mikell, Considine and Demps.

THEY NEED TO GIVE IT THE F UP ON S.CONSODINE.

Another "in the right place all the time, just cant tackle- gets TRUCKED in fact" player.

F.

FD- I think Reeds chances are better than 50-50. They like to have a 'thumper' back there, and if you think Dawk's lost some of that (i dont necesarily) there's nobody back there on the roster that we know of (read: who's played for them before that we've seen) who can add that to their resume without lying.

I also am a Mikell fan, but think that Reed could make this team. Again, it's surely 1 to watch.

As for others:

D.Jackson.
I think that for a rookie WR, we're goin to see more of this guy on gamedays than any other rookie WR ever. I honestly think (if they're wise) they'll have about 12 to 15 plays drawn up for him each Sunday- or i should say, packages that he is on the field for, with the starting offense. Hell, send him deep, decoy his ass. See how the D reacts. Do that a few times and then actually throw the ball his way downfield.

If NOTHING else, you'll buy some more room for what seemingly is to be a TE heavy, multiple RB spread offense.

That brings me to

Pitt Grad Kris Wilson. I think he has this team made, but i wanna see how they use him in camp/preseason games. I envision them havin him on the field PLENTY inside the redzone along with LJ- so that both TEs can play off LBs and 1 of them should be open in the area where they had a lot of trouble last yr, and where super 5 is clearly not goin to throw the ball to a WR if he has an inkling of doubt about how open the guy is.

McNabb loves the TEs inside the 20's and i think Wilson gives them another strong option for that area of the field.

FB- Meh. If I felt they were gonna use it more, Id be MAYBE more excited- this is more like a novelty. A (currently) 276 lb FB? I cant see him makin the team at that wt,.playin FB but we'll see.

BOOKER- I think im most excited to see how they use him. I dont know if it means the end for Tony Hunt or not but i DO know that this guy will play a LOT. I think its an added dimension that they havent had the luxury of using (2 similar backs) in the past, and along with D.Jackson, marks a shift in philosophy for the team, if thru no choice of their own.

If they cant beat teams with star power (the WR we all wanted) why not just flood the field with speed? Even the additon of K.Wilson speaks to a higher emphasis on speed this yr. Adding D.Jackson and Booker, on the field with Westy and Curtis? Thats a very fast set of weapons, if not established 100% or "lethal" based on resume.

Does / Can D.Howard make this team?

Im hoping K.Dunlap is still with the team when I finally make it to camp, just wanna lay eyes on that bohemoth, let alone see if he can play a lick.

Herremans vs Field- can he hold onto his starting gig or is this really Max Jean Man Boob's job to lose?

And that he can play.

Sure...it's a position to watch. I think it's between Demps, Considine, Reed, and Paschal for 2 spots. I think Demps is a lock unless he completely shits the bed. I think they like Considine more than Reed. You know the Eagles are painfully slow on moving away from undersized white players unless they make tons of mental mistakes.

I'd keep Reed over Considine or maybe even keep 5 safeties, but I think THEY think Considine won't hurt them in coverage and they can survive with him if he has to play, while Reed would be exposed in coverage given some game film.

I think that, but don't know it.

They put that gameplan in for him against the Patriots where he just played deep middle and throttled people...it seems hard to believe a team out there couldn't use him in the same way and take advantage of the talents he has left, but I just don't have a good feeling.

He put more hits on WRs that game that the rest of the secondary did, together, the entire season.

You want him to be a whining guy with a chronic knee boo boo?

Seriously-

FD- I think Demps has the team made- there's the grace period in effect for him I think (not that he;ll need it).

He's in.

It IS between Reed and S.C. and I think in the end, REED has got to win out.

He HAS to.

For the love of GOD he HAS TO.

Exactly...you're trying to talk yourself into it!

I think they are going to point out that Demps has kickoff return experience. Between Considine and Reed, Considine is the better special teams player, he has better speed, is better in coverage, and has more starting experience.

I'm not saying they are right to keep Reed over Considine, but that's what I think they'll say.

Plus, they can always pick up Reed in November when Considine's should explodes again.

Couple things-

a) Read today where M.Gasperson is tryin to make the squad now as a TE. He's apparently up to 230 on a 6'4 frame and they obviously liked something about this dude to hang onto him 3 straight yrs on the P-squad. Best of luck, but they're jammed up at TE by my count.

b) This is lifted right out of the paper today- make of it what you will. I'll chose to look at it as an oversight by the guys who run the lockerroom-

- in a crowded NovaCare locker room, where lots of new guys are dressing out of temporary stalls set up in the middle of the floor, unsigned defensive tackle Kimo Von Oelhoffen still has a stall with his nameplate and number above it. And nobody is wearing Kimo's No. 66. Either the equipment guys are observing a very unusual period of extended mourning, or a 15th NFL season still could be in the offing for the 37-year-old Hawaiian . .

From Spuds this morning:

If the Eagles keep four safeties, the names that jump out are Dawkins, Mikell, Considine and Demps. If they keep five, the competition among Reed and Paschal will be particularly intense.

Sad.

Word out of Eagles Camp per an update on 950am yesterday was that Lito will play some WR this yr.

Um, what?

This SCREAMS appeasement to me.

The cat's made comments on and off durin his entire time here that he'd like to play some WR, and I guess now they're goin to give him that shot when he comes to camp.

Stellar.

I have no doubt he can make plays with the ball in his hands, but this just kinda smells of a desperate ploy to keep Sheppard content.

We'll see. Who knows if theres any real legs behind this story.

950 is reporting that if Lito reports to the next OTA, the coaching staff may consider putting him as a slot WR (which he has been campaigning for, seemingly, for a while).

So let's see - they're going to allow him to have a couple plays in the slot because he's unhappy, but they seemingly don't care about unhappy players.

Egads.

Guess they figured they could do that while replacing Sampy, who had a dislocated ankle (yikes) in practice.

I don't see how this ends well for either side.

It's so transparent.
How do they expect him to remain on the field and upright if he's now expected to take a couple hits (potentially) a game as a WR?

So pathetic.
