Bam Childress is an example of a guy they are signing just to see what happens. He's been on the practice squad in NE for 2 or 3 years, so they obviously saw something in him worth investigating. He returns kicks and has been working on punts. He can play (obviously not that well) CB or WR. They are signing him to see if by some stroke of luck he's the next Michael Lewis who comes out of nowhere as a returner, I'm guessing.
It costs them next to nothing to evaluate him for the next few months, so why not?
With Klecko and Kris Wilson, it's another pair of no-risk propositions. If he pans out, they have a starting fullback and one of the biggest in the league. If he doesn't, they wasted 5 figures in a throwaway investment.
The point is you have very limited restriction in roster size right now, so why not get a couple guys in early, let them train with you in the off-season, see if you have something, and dump them in the summer if they don't work out. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
