Mike Florio taps into Talon's brain (God bless him)...

ANQUAN BOLTIN'?

Now that the Cardinals have locked up receiver Larry Fitzgerald at a more affordable (or, as the case may be, less unaffordable) price over the next four seasons, they might have to deal with another thorny issue at the position.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Anquan Boldin could want more money and/or a trade in the wake of Fitzgerald's $10 million-per-year contract.

Per Schefter, some in the Cardinals organization actually regard Boldin as the better wideout. But Boldin will make far, far less than Fitzgerald over the next three seasons -- he's due to earn base salaries of $2.5 million, $2.75 million, $3 million.

In our view, Fitzgerald and Boldin together is a luxury that the Cardinals don't need, especially with coach Ken Whisenhunt presumably trying to bring a Pittsburgh-style power running vibe to the desert.

Assuming that the Cardinals have a plan (which could be a dangerous assumption because we're talking about, you know, the Cardinals), the huge deal given to Fitzgerald should be regarded as evidence that they've opted to keep Fitzgerald over the long haul, and to get what they can for Boldin.

Throw in the fact that Boldin is represented by Drew Rosenhaus, and the stage is set for Boldin to start making noise about moving on.

Possible destinations are Philly, Dallas, and the Redskins.

I read he's a big cap hit to move. Wish more writers would take that into account

I don't understand how it works, but how big of a cap hit could he be if he's not making more than 3 mil per year over the next 3 years?

Can a cap hit be larger than a player's annual salary?

Yeah, b/c of bonuses. They get accelerated if the player is traded or cut. The cap hit for players like this are usually bigger

Boldin's cap hit should be all that bad. In the "worst case scenario" (based on what I could find), his salary this year would be about $3 million and the Cards could absorb $7 million for dealing him, for a hit of roughly $4 million in dead money this season.

That's the WORST case.

I think the reason reporters aren't consider cap hits that much right now is the fact that every team is so flush with cap room.

I mean, I've heard a number of reports that the Bengals wouldn't trade Chad Johnson because of his cap hit, but the Bengals have over $30 million in cap space. Would a few million really change their plans for the rest of the off-season?

Obviously teams want to take the minimum amount of hits and dead money possible, but teams have an extraordinary amount of space this year...more than at any point in the league's history under the CBA.

"shouldn't be that bad", obviously.

For example, Reggie Brown costs something like $2 mil against the cap if he stays, and around $8 mil if cut or traded

FD, that is true. But the cardnals still dont have much cap room and 4 million in dead money would be a pain. That being said, cant they split the dead money in half for this years cap if they classify the trade as a post june 1 transaction?

Then they can't get any draft picks from this year for him. Plus I think the cap hit would still apply to this year, I think it goes up to November for transactions

I think you can make a transaction NOW and classify it as a June 1st transaction....

regarding Dallas going after Boldin...I read on a cowboys blog how having Rosenhaus helps Dallas's chances...

This Rosenhaus thing would seem to help Philly, NOT DALLAS. Think about it. Is TO, in the last year of his contract, going to be happy if a new WR (BOLDIN) comes to Dallas, gets a monster DEAL, negotiated by HIS AGENT. IF IM ROSENHAUS, I STAY CLEAR OF DALLAS. That leaves the REdskins and Philly. I know DREW has had a good relationship with the skins....

Talk about the circle of life...Bolding gets sent to Dallas, TO goes bonkers, gets cut..and picked up by the birds for one...last...run.

Yeah, you're right about the June 1/two year thing. Still doesn't seem like they could afford to do it, with draft picks and other players to sign

Dan Klecko is here today.

Im fine with adding him to the DT rotation- kinda a tweener with very good athletic ability but no 'true' position. I think he even plays FB at times and I know he goes out on those lineman eligible pass plays on the goal line.

He plays all over, and i know he cant cut it along the DL, but cant play LB full time either.

That said, he has stayed in the league since being drafted by NE, and later landing on the Colts.

FB? Fine. Way I look at it, they dont really have a guy entrenched there.

Unless Bill Sampy has bulked up.

'real run'.

Certainly wasnt meant to come off as one.

Perhaps Im biased, I dont know, I remember him being drafted, and liking how open NE was in tryin to find SOME WAY to get him on the field?

I think he's a football player, perhaps not the perfect fit anywhere, but he's a good football player- I honestly believe this.

SOmetimes maybe it doesnt have to be all about Ht/Wt./40 time i guess?

This site has the bengals at $15 mil

I was going from "ask the commish", but I have no idea what the real number is.

Still, if Chad Johnson costs them $7 or $8 million, that's still more than enough money to sign their draft picks and things like that.

I'm just saying there aren't many teams that can't "afford" to trade a player out there.

The Eagles would probably take a $5 million hit of dead money for trading Lito. Does anyone think that would stop them?

No. And it wont.

Among remainin WRs (Bryant Johnson who I hear has somehow a very high price tag with very little resume to back it, and DJ (Cant)Hacket comin off an injury marred season- are we as the fans content on passing on both, and not trading for a wr, and headin into next yr with Brown, Curtis, Baskett and Avant as the top 4 wrs?

It's at $15 mil for the Bengals, and that wouldn't allow them to sign all their draft picks or anyone else.

DOing the math with the Eagles, they'd have $10 mil left after all is said and done with draft picks and everything else. That's with twice the money the Bengals have.
