Hmmm.....the title reminds me of "Krusty's Komedy Klassic".

Anyway, is anyone really surprised? We haven't heard his name practically all year, he's still talking about "the new 100%", which is probably like the New Coke or something, and had not Howard manned up and helped with that big stand, he'd be joining him riding the pine longer.

The outcry would be vastly different if they benched another certain player who's recovering from the same injury...

Just poked around to look at the numbers. Dropping Kearse is about a 1.5, 1.6 M cap hit. Dropping Howard earns about 200k cap-wise.

Unless he wants to redo his deal or puts together 6 monster games from the bench, Kearse should be gone.

That link above says Kearse gets $6million next year. How can the cap hit be that low?

I am surprised at how blunt Shephard's comments are.

Kearse isn't healthy so I am really not surprised he isn't able to keep pace.

I kind of think the Eagles might hold onto Howard as a run-stuffer. He made some good stops on the goal line and they really aren't that deep at Tackle. $2 million isn't really that much to waste.

The cap hit would be that low because it's base off his signing bonus, not his salary.

Kearse will be gone next season. As Seth is so fond of saying, 'book it.' He has never justified the investment. Ditto with Darren Howard. I'd expect bigger contributions from a 4th round draft pick than the team receives from either. The Eagles haven't had a DE that can consistently rush the passer since Hugh Douglas left town. It's time for them to start looking for one.

" Biggest F.A. bust in Eagles History?"

He's gotta be top 3 considering his perceived ability/age/contract/ROI.

The only thing that prevents me from appointing him #1 is the unknown of last season after such a strong start and then the injury.

But overall, he definitely didn't live up to expectations.

So teams can pay whatever salary they want and it doesn't count toward the cap?

I think perhaps cap hit is being used to refer to the "extra" hit in addition to the salary, so the total against the cap is salary + cap hit.

3. What is a cap hit?
If a team releases or trades a player during the offseason, they have to accelerate the remaining portion of the prorated signing bonus. Let's say that the team cuts a player May 1 in the second year of a four-year contract that has a $4 million signing bonus. They have to take a $3 million cap hit that year. If they release such a player and he is claimed on waivers, the same formula applies. There is a benefit to releasing a player after June 1. After June 1, the team only has to take the $1 million portion of the signing bonus applied to this year's cap. They can then take the remaining $2 million hit next year. But if that player is claimed on waivers, the cap hit comes this year.

Biggest F.A. bust in Eagles History?

I don't think so. Before the injury I felt that despite having similar numbers in 2004/2005, he played great football in 2004 and average in 2005.

In 2006, he looked like he was going to have his breakout season when the ACL came.

This year he's clearly older/diminished/injured.

You were paying for a double digit sack guy and you didn't get it, but I don't think he played poorly...just didn't live up to expectations. I actually thought he played the run really well, too.

Even if you look at the price they paid, it's not even that outrageous in hindsight. Freeney got 6 years, $72 million, $30 million guaranteed.

Kearse got 8 years, $66 million, with $16 million in guarantees. Long story short, he did not live up to expectations, but I don't think he can be considered the worst in history.

Is there is a list of some of the big FA busts out there? It's tough for me to remember all the FA signings the Eagles have made over the years, let alone all the other teams out there.

Just re-read the question and it's obviously Eagles history we're looking for here...yikes.

In Eagles history, I'd have to say yes at this point.

I remember Steve Everitt being a pretty massive bust as a player, but Kearse was made the highest paid defensive end in history at the time.

I just wanted to get all the contract details straight with him, but in 1997, Everitt signed a 5 year $12 million contact with a $2 million signing bonus.

In 1997, the salary cap was $41 million for the entire 53 man roster.

He was actually paid more per season than any of the QBs he was hiking the ball to the entire time he was an Eagle. That might qualify him for biggest bust status because he had to be the highest paid center in the league or very close to it.
