Seriously, how did he not know? I guess the only "unfair" part about it is that he wasn't the only player. Shit the last tie occurred while he was playing in the NFL. It was a GREAT game...with Burress being tackled on the 1 in a shoot out with the Stillers and Falcons.
Oh...I guess, he doesn't vote, doesn't watch football and doesn't run when the rush is coming.

It is one thing to be so oblivious that he didn't know.
But supah five took stupid to a whole new level by offering up an opinion as to how bad he thinks the rule is, acted like a victim to the rule since he was ready for another chance to get out there, and pointed out how inadequate the rule is sighting the playoffs as evidence.
What a dummy.

I may have missed this one, but one of the articles had used the monniker "Super 5"...I thought that was something Johnson concocted. It may well have been pilfered by the columnists in the Inky.....or was this nickname first used in the papers and then by Johnson?

So bib Ben came to Super 5's defense:
"I think people are making too big a deal and are being too hard on Donovan, because you'd be surprised - I bet at least 50 percent of the league didn't know that at the time," Roethlisberger said.
"You'd be real surprised. I think people just assume that the quarterback should know it all and that everyone should know that stuff, and it's not necessarily true, because who ever thinks about that stuff?"
The Steelers play the Bengals tomorrow night.
"How often does it come up?" Roethlisberger said. "The rules change so often that you never know what happens. People are being way, way too hard on Donovan and making way too big a deal of this."

Hines Ward admitted he didn't know about ties after Ben's comments.
I can accept that many players don't know about it. Most of them seem very linear in their thinking to me and seem to only be concerned with what is directly in front of them.
But given that, I find it unfathomable that once they hit the 2 minute mark of the overtime that coaches didn't at least mention it. T
Even a passing "alright fellas this is our last chance to get this one" for the offense didn't happen?!?!
As bad as it is that players don't know the rule, it is unacceptable that players who were involved in a tie game weren't reminded of it as the clock wound down. That is in the coaches.
I don't get it.

I Reeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaalllly think people are making too much of this.
I think people are overstimating how much time professional athletes spend reading rule books. Some people knew, some people didn't. Didn't change the game.

That's a bigger problem, to me. I expect that the offense and defense should be having conversations with the staff that would include the fact that the game might be ending in a tie once it became evident it was a possibility.
That might change the way a corner plays a ball, what a WR does after the catch, where a QB goes with the football.
I don't blame McNabb for not knowing. It's embarrasing, for certain, and I think he's an idiot. However, not every player knows every rule of the game and the rules are always in flux. It's the job of the coaches to explain situational situation in these rare events.
It reminds me of a couple years ago when no one knew Field Goals could be returned if they come up short.

Yeah...that was his simple mind getting defensive, I think. From what I heard/read there was a lot of visable head shaking and eye rolling when he made the first comments, so I think he reacted without thinking to defend himself.
Obviously, as we've learned in the past, his family isn't known for thinking on their feet.

This is not some "obscure rule."
I understand not every player is going to know every rule. The overtime rule has been in place since the 70's I think, unchanged.
And you don't know that it didn't affect the game. I would think that there would have been a heightened sense of urgency as the clock wound down knowing that the game was almost over, especially on that last possession.
Lastly, I don't know one football fan who didn't know that the game could end in a tie. It's inexcusable and pathetic that many players don't know such a basic thing.

And considering they punted with 2 minutes left on 4th and 1, maybe the Fat Man didn't know the rules either.

Agreed and agreed.

Logic would cause such a conclusion, but logic rarely fuels the mind and actions of Reid and McNabb.
See Bowl, Super.

well, Dino, here's what i'd say. You appear to think it's a well known rule that shoudl be common knowledge.
A lot of professional football players seem to disagree.
No offense to you, but if Hines Ward (as one example) tells me he didn't know, I think there's a case to be made for the fact that some very good NFL players don't know the rule.
Runyan even said the only reason he knew was because he was taking a shit before the game and reading the Bangals media guide for the game, which had the game rules for the stadium in it.
I think he SHOULD have known, but I think this whole situation illustrates the fact that NFL players don't look at the game the same way the fans do. They have to figure out 15 different ways to use hand placement to block 6 different DE's they'll face every given week and we sit on our fat asses memorizing stats and rule books.

Well, the idea is a tie is better than a loss. If they finish 10-5-1, for instance, they beat a team for a wild card spot that has a 10-6 record. If you don't convert that 4th down, it's an auomatic loss from that point on the field.

Hey, I can agree that he should have known and I can agree that you play to win the game.
Here's the rub...you've got a 4th and 1 that puts your season on the line. Convert it and you stay alive for another 4 downs. Miss it, and the next 6 games don't matter.
Given their success in similar situations this year, i think he had no choice but to punt and play for 10-5-1. If he was even at midfield, I'd go for it. At your own 20? Too much of a gamble.
