Dear Super 5

When I boo you this Sunday at the game please don't think it is because you are black.

It will be because you killed a dozen worms or under threw Curtis by 10 yards.

Sincerely your pal,

Hulk, opinion respected but I disagree. You know, far more than I will EVER be able to understand, that hardships and prejudices for AAs don’t just begin in the NFL.

I believe the opinions of others, (Culpepper, McNair, Young or Campbell) have somewhat of a minor significance in comparison to the heart of the matter which is how McNabb feels the need to constantly act it out.

When approached by media types, Steve McNair said "No McNabb questions".

I believe F_B is right in that they do feel some sort of way, but won't bring it out in the open due to it getting blown up by the media. So the media has no choice but to interview guys like Young and Campbell.

But the thing is that out of the #s of AA QB's that have played this game (and some have made issues out of race, sure), McNabb is the most high profile to make a statement like this, especially since he was the NFL's darling not too long ago.

Wonder why no one's interviewed Leftwich? Hmm?

I wonder if #5 goes go a tear and lights up the league for the next 5-7 weeks and is the top QB in the league thus turning the Birds into the best in the league, if a reporter asks VY or JC the same question about race if their answer is different???

A lot of peopel IMO are of the mind set that McNabb is on his way out in Philly, so they don't want to be linked up with a loser or disgruntled player... So what happens if Donovan turns the team around and is the top guy and darling of the league again if the new QB's feel it's ok to side with McNabb... just a thought.

Personally I don't recall and use of the N word but I know I've heard a lot of people white and black calling each other "my nigga" which doesn't really have the same meaning but close enough to be offensive at least to me anyway... I've never understood why so many people feel that a slight change in pronunciation could/does change the meaning of the word... I guess I'm sheltered more than I thought

My only hope for my FFL team to climb out of the basement. First two draft picks were Tomlinson and McNabb and both are black! Any coincidence my FFL team is in last place?

Dean-o,

Supah 5's hypersensitivity and sheltered nature not withstanding still doesnt minimalize the issue that their does exist some prejudice among the media and fans when it comes to AA athletes.

Seriously- where's the media blitz for Baretta or Phil Spector? They're in the news to be sure but not like O.J.

Then again, O.J. IS a throat slashing coke monster from hell, so...

Fred, … a picture is worth a thousand. Give the public what they want, … would you rather be looking at Baretta and his (former) toothless babe setting on a couch on the front porch of their trailer? Come to think of it, Spector isn’t exactly photogenic either.

It’s not because they’re white that they’re not smattered all over the front page, … it’s because they’re fugly

Can't help thinking... had McNabb just had his fat ass in shape for Super Bowl 39, any talk of a black QB being judged by different standards or not being able to win the big one would be a non-issue. He would always be able to say... "I won the Super Bowl."

But that ship sailed when tubby started vomiting on his cleats at the end of the game.

Needing 10 points to tie with 10 minutes remaining (after scoring 14 points in the previous 50 minutes) was also a factor, though.

Plus, The Patriots had advance video surveilance that McNabb was prone to puking in the state of Florida.

True, but some nimrod would've blurted out "Why was Rodney Harrison your favorite go-to guy in the red zone?", and then it all would've started over again.

And count me as being wrong, but I don't even think a SB win would've been enough to change McNabb's mind.

Think the difference between Blake and OJ is that OJ has done everything he can to keep his name in the news.

If you get away with murder it might be a wise decision to disapear or at least lay low.

Busy day at the level today.

My thought is that McNabb is really unclear about why he's receiving bad press and that the only way that HE can rationalize it is through race.

He was booed on draft day. How often does that happen?

He was blamed for much (mainly by me, NEAG and several others), including playoff losses and the SB loss.

He was having his "success" questioned that it was attributable to his race rather than what it was...his success. He had the NCAAP question him and minimize him. This is the largest political organization for AA in the US that needed to comment on effin' football? He married his college GF...and has an otherwise boring life. There are plenty of us who found it annoying that he was so boring and his sense of humor was akin to the bland jokes (or worse) of the Emmy's etc.

McNabb never could understand it (in retrospect, I don't always understand it either) what seems like an irrational dislike of the man. He's not that great a football player, but plenty on THIS board comment on how the media sucks Favre's schlong but gives so undervalues McNabb, PARTICULARLY in light of the TO incident etc. Why does Favre get such a pass? Sean Jones, Reggie White and Desmond Howard were as much SB winners as Favre ever was.

"He was booed on draft day. How often does that happen?"......ever seen a JETS draft? They boo(and they are right too) almost every top draft selection. The only team that makes an Eagles draft look like MENSA members.

There is a couple of big, major issues with McNAbb, and the boos.

I believe McNabb when he says he feels that Black QB's have to do more to prove themselves than White QB's. I think he is wrong here, but I believe "HE" feels that way.

I think that almost all of us would agree that McNabb gets booed, when he plays poorly, not because of his skin color. He gets second guessed, because this team went to 4 straight NFC championship games and only one superbowl from that. IS that unfair, maybe to a casual fan, or other who are just happy to be in a Conference Championship game? Yes, it is. But to the majority of Eagle fans, we expected more from him, because we thought he could do it.
When he didn't come through(key picks, bad throws and throws up)he got critized for the losses. He didn't want to be the face for of those losses, but he was. As much as he was for the brilliant wins.

So here we are, a good QB who thinks he's got the shaft because of race, and a city and media, who think he got somewhat of a unfair shake too, but he used race as an excuse for his short comings, and thats just not right.

I feel bad for McNabb, because I really don't think he ever "got" Philly, it's fans or the media. TO be fair, most don't until later. Even more truthful, Philly fans don;t appreciate what they have until it's gone.

McNabb was expected to be and advertised better than he is. He's a good football player, but he's not the great player the national media believes he is. In that way, I agree the media was unfair to him.

Maybe the worst part of this, is that McNabb felt in his heart, that there was enough of a racial biased towards him, that he cut off a key element to his game becuase he was more worried about disproving a stereo type, than using his God given talent to excel.

I honestly wish McNabb the best in his future. I hope he is able to go to a team that gives him peace with who he is, and what he can do......

IMS's best post ever and he'll never be capable of better.

Quit and get a new handle, retire after that one.

It's PERFECT and sums up EXACTLY how I feel on the entire matter.

Except the last line.

If he leaves I want him to LOSE LOSE LOSE and pine for the days in Philly when "It wasn't that bad I guess".

F him when/if he leaves.

Nicely worded, IMS.

Efanok....NO, I'm not sticking up for him, I'm formulating a reason for WHY he may feel (however incorrectly) the way he does.

PS, I think to mention that Grossman gets criticized in the same breath is disingenuous. He sucks so much ass and was largely perceived as the reason for Chicago's failure. Many pundits don't think that McNabb was the reason for the Birds' inability to win it. He wasn't even perceived as a choke artist ala Peyton...and that was largely because Peyton decimated records during the season but would regress to a highschool QB when he played the Patriots.

I COMPLETELY agree that the issue isn't race. What I'm saying is that it is a shame that McNabb doesn't realize that it is his play that is/was/always will be the issue for the MAJORITY of fans. McNabb's contention of racism was more regarding the media and NOT the fans. I don't think he conflated the two. His contention was that there was a different method in the way the media dealt with black QBs and non black QBs referring to the former as great athletes rather than great QBs. To be honest, I don't even think he came across as bothered by the concept till he talked about it and was subsequently barraged by the media about it.
