But his alleged closeness with Shanahan doesn't entirely explain his past Plummer love away.

He seems pretty tight with the fat man -- he has largely overlooked the stuff with his sons and when he did report it he did so in, 'let's pray for that family' kind of way.

His dislike goes beyond that.

This goes back to what McNabb backers have been saying all along, that for whatever reason, he is just a polarizing figure. Which I just don't get. Sure he's goofy, probably a bit thin-skinned, sometimes jittery in the pocket and his mom talks too much. But he generally seems to be a good family guy who avoids off the field drama like the plague.

Other than the SB era season when McNabb truly distinguished himself and King had to relent in his repeated swipes, the only other time I recall him even attempting to defend McNabb was during the TO fiasco, which in retrospect it was clear who the villain was.

not exactly birdsfan. there were people, including some on this board, who at least tacitly did the 'TO's got a point' dance. some did it just to stir the pot, but there were and are plenty of misguided people who still think there was a glint of truth in TO's frontal assault on #5.

Another q to piggyback off King's tightness with the fat man - has he criticized the Eagles FO for a variety of moves, aside from signing TO (and even he was proven wrong there, at least for a while)?

And I thought that the reason he didn't like McNabb is that McNabb made him look like a total tool when he was all over Couch. To admit that McNabb is the better QB is to admit that he was wrong about what was hyped up to be the biggest QB draft class in years. Hype that he himself helped promote.

Maybe there's such a thing as taking the "too high" road... where people would start to think that McNabb doubted himself? I mean, he offered NO response to Owens outside the infamous "keep my name outta yo mouth." Admirable to most, but could also be viewed as "he thinks he's too good for Owens" or "hmmm, maybe there's something there..."

That and, combined with the Rush Limbaugh thing, when a person is criticized too frrequently--rightly or otherwise--there is a tendency to start looking for faults in that person. Also, anytime the person alludes to those criticisms in any form, he tends to be seen as a victim-- and I think we can all agree McNabb does little to avoid that label.

OK. Given all of the evidence presented here, I withdraw my first point and concede that King is a bitch for stating that he doesn't not like McNabb when he clearly does not like McNabb.

Apparently King was on 950 this morning defending his decision on McNabb, saying that he was basing it on injury and talent (which is why McNair is ranked 13th), and the host was still ripping him even after the fact, saying that it's dumb to put a list together and cite injury as a factor (given the nature of the sport), and that it was just something Peter King put together so that people could talk about what Peter King did.

Sounds about right.

But the host also tore King to shreds when he mentioned Eli Manning's position on the list (I assume it's higher than 5's).

Eh... personally, I think lists like that are stupid in terms of the real game. They obviously have their place in fantasy football, and those are the only rankings I pay attention to.

The list is indefinsible. And King's being taken to task for it by his readers too, judging from the e-mails he received following Monday's column that were reprinted in Tuesday's edition.

actually, bass, eli was ranked 23. the host (glen foley) was actually stating that eli ought to be higher considering he's taken his team to the playoffs.

the funny thing about the show this morning was that glen foley was absolutely ripping king before he came on (calling king an asskisser who won't bash anyone lest he lose any sources, and that he made the ranking so "controversial" simply to bring attention to himself). when king came on a few minutes later, it was pretty awkward between two of them, and it sounded like king was really pissed by trying his best to hide it.

As for how I arrived at my picks, other than with a divining rod, I used a few measuring sticks. I value wins from my quarterback, and that helped Manning and Brady, the leaders in victories over the last two years. I value postseason success, and their seven combined wins over the past two years is significant. Completion percentage and yards-per-attempt are the two passing stats I value the most because they tell you how often a quarterback succeeds in efficiently moving the chains through the air. Finally, intangibles. Brady led all passers with a 10 on a 10-point scale, because he's a coach, an offseason facilitator, a free-agent recruiter -- and he does it while retaining respect from the guys he often has to lean on hard.

And, hey -- don't go saying, "King's such an idiot! He thinks Jon Kitna's one of the best quarterbacks in football.'' That's not what I think. What I think is that by the end of this year, we'll have seen Kitna as one of the 10 most productive quarterbacks in the NFL this season. Kitna's the golden child in the perfect spot for a quarterback in 2007, just as with every Mike Martz quarterback of the past few years. Now, it's fine if you want to say, "King's such an idiot! He thinks Kitna's going to throw for 4,300 again! No way!'' It's fine because it's your opinion, but it's probably wrong.

Ugh. This list is a joke.

So if he's basing it on the last 2 years (which isn't a bad thing) and Eli Manning's in the bottom 10? WAY below Kitna? Manning has been productive, at least statistically, and he's at least led his team to the playoffs.

JP Lossman is going to have a better season than Alex Smith.
Vick is going to have a more productive season than Jeff Garcia.
Jake DelHomme is going to be a better QB this year than Eli Manning, even though Jake may not be the starter come Opening Day.

And measuring wins? Is that why FIVE QBs are in the top 11 with no more than 2 years experience?

This list is a freakin' joke. No way to defend it at all after #2.

Gotcha flesh, and I agree - based on King's "criteria" (and despite his maddening delivery), Manning should be rated higher, definitely higher than guys who have yet to play more than one season, let alone make it to the playoffs.

I'm no fan of Sheli, but he's better than King gives him credit for.

I love how he uses efficiency, wins, etc. to defend his picks of Manning and Brady (which were both justified to be at the top in either order) and immediately turns around to defend Kitna on "total number of passing yards".

Kitna won 5 games in the last 3 years, has only thrown for more TDs than INTs 2 times in his career (1999 and 2003), and had a 76 QB rating last year under Mike Martz.

It's a good thing the NFL has developed the "rating system" so writers don't have to just throw random stats together to determine who is being more efficient.

With durability, why isn't Carson Palmer mentioned?

He's started 3 years and ended 2 of those 3 seasons inactive due to injury. One of his season ending knee injuries happened in week 12 and he only missed 3 games, but Kitna had to finish the year for him. He came back the next season and ended the year with a torn ACL.

So is Palmer more durable because his season ending injuries happened late in the season? Is that how it works?

Heck, if that's the case I guess Westbrook has been a durable back throughout his career because his 2 season ending injured happened in weeks 13 and 14 of the season.

The whole logic he uses is just dumb all over the place.

foley made that point on the show, too. king's response was basically, palmer was healthy last year while mcnabb has yet to play a game since his most recent injury. He wasn't giving palmer credit for not missing games simply because his injury occured in a playoff game his team lost so he didnt actually miss any time.

speaking of injuries in the post season, since mcnabb was knocked out the carolina playoff game in 2003 and would not have played for who knows how many weeks, technically, he has not completed 4 out of the last 5 seasons due to injury, not the 3 out of 5 he is normally given credit for.
