has nothing to do with the Eagles, but I'll be dammed if the Jets don't sound just like the Eagles...

He suffered a concussion against Buffalo in Week 8, then had his streak of 104 consecutive starts snapped the following week against the Redskins. He then suffered a severely sprained left ankle in an upset victory over the Steelers in Week 10. He limped through the next two games, taking pain-killing injections in the ankle, before a fall off a makeshift training table before the Week 14 game against the Patriots ended his season.
Coles, who said the organization had concerns about how much he has left because of his fearless style of play, can't change his style.
"I only know one way to play," he said.
Coles said he approached the club for a second time about a long-term contract after this season, but said he was told his production was down. Their response left him bewildered.
"I played hurt," he said. "I ran clear-out routes for Jerricho (Cotchery). They praised me for my toughness and not worrying about my numbers. They tell me that I'm an unselfish player.
"I do everything they ask me to do and then when it comes to business, they tell me my production is down. That's not right."
That thing about the "makeshift training table, sounds like the way players used to describe the Vet

Pats have informed Donte Softserve that they won't be paying him his 2/25 bonus, putting him on the market.

I'd love Stallworth back, but only if they can't engineer a trade for someone better.
The problem is Stallworth will probably have to be signed within the first 2 weeks of FA and trades get done mostly closer to draft day.

Would he even come back here? Thought he was still mad/annoyed at the FO for "leaking" details about his red-flagging.
Seems like Tennessee's interested in him, at any rate.

The Titans were interested last year, too.
I think he was on Eskin and said he'd love to play for the Eagles or any other team should the Patriots not pick up his option. That said, he's going to go with the best offer. If that's from the Birds, I imagine he'll end up with the Birds...I don't think he'd turn them down with all things equal, but he certainly won't be giving them a discount.

SUPPOSEDLY Philly will be a major player in trying to get Fitz outta AZ.
I don't know if i buy this, but it's out there.
Ive said out here in the recent past that Stallworth comin back is the most likely scenario if they're to upgrade WR & I'm stickin with that over a trade for a premiere WR.
(they keep all their picks, he knows the system, McNabb several times in the past lamented publically the F.O. letting him walk and its likely the CHEAPEST way to upgrade the position).

The Eagles could use him if they move Curtis back to the slot. He and Curtis both give the Eagles legit downfield targets. Curtis, of course, made his bones being the "go-tp" slot reveiver.
If they pursue Stallworth, it will end up irritating the Eagles faithful because it will mean far more three wide sets - unless you think the Eagles would be fine paying Curtis his money for bench work. Putting Curtis and Stallworth on the field at the same time is possible, of course. I just don't know if they'd be as effective as having a speed guy/big body guy on the field.
I mentioned two guys earlier that I thought could help the Eagles. One is Tory Holt. No need to list the shortcomings, most fans know them (age, speed). He can contribute to a team that has little WR development. The other guy I mentioned was a big body type, Bryant Johnson, from the Cards. He's been second/third fiddle to a standout duo in 'Zona. Bring him in to seriously challenge Brown, who has had no serious competition in a couple years. Rookies never really get a chance to challenge starters on Reid's team. Johnson has legit speed and is a nice big target for a QB that likes to throw the ball where only the WR can get the ball and no one else can (perhaps why TO and, to a lesser extent, Baskett found success).
I guess what I'm saying is that a move toward Stallworth is a move that says, "More of the same." It worked for their system - to the coach's satisfaction - before, so do it again. A move in another direction signals possible growth and change in the coaching ranks. It signals, "We need to do something different because our past and current skill sets are not getting it done."

Eagles Want Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald
Written by Micah Warren
Saturday, 16 February 2008
A source with knowledge of the situation has told me that the Philadelphia Eagles are going after Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald pretty hard. Fitzgerald, 24, will be 25 years old when the 2008 season starts and has already been to two Pro Bowls (2005, 2007).
The Eagles have been widely criticized for not having enough playmaking receivers on offense. Fitzgerald told 610 WIP sports radio in Philadelphia during Super Bowl week that the Eagles are on a short list of teams he'd like to play for if dealt (he backed off of that a bit during the Pro Bowl week).
It's one thing for the Eagles to want Fitgerald, it's another thing entirely for them to actually acquire him via trade. The Cardinals have put themselves in a spot by agreeing to a contract that gives him a base salary of $14.592 million for 2008 and $17.355 million for 2009. Numbers that are absolutely ridiculous for any wide receiver. The Cardinals want to sign him to a long-term deal that would lower his cap number and keep him a Cardinal. This quote is from the Arizona Republic:
I feel like the talks have been progressing," [Cardinals GM Rod] Graves said of negotiations with Fitzgerald's agent, Eugene Parker. "I don't want to over-characterize our discussions. I do think Larry has indicated a strong desire to remain with our team, and Eugene has reiterated that a number of times."
There remains the distinct possibility that Fitgerald signs with the Cardinals, but with linebackers Karlos Dansby (franchise tag) and Calvin Pace (impending free agent) having contract issues of their own, the football team in Arizona has its hands full. AZCardinals.com reported on February 7th that the Cardinals had made Fitzgerald an offer, although Graves declined to get into specifics.
This is going to be a tough deal to get done. In order to get out of paying Fitgerald his ludicrous base salary, they have three options: Trade him, release him or re-negotiate with him. The Eagles represent one solution to this dilemma. It is not known exactly what it would take to pry Fitzgerald from the Cardinals' clutches, but with the Cardinals facing 4th and 15 and a full-court press (thanks "Naked Gun"), they may be in line to get a decent deal on him. Of course, this will be if the Eagles have negotiated a long-term deal with him prior to the deal. I don't care what team you name, they won't pay a wide receiver (even a good one) $14.592 million for a season.
Fitgerald has twice caught 100 balls or more in a season (103 in 2005, 100 in 2007) and rang up 1,409 receiving yards in both of those years.

Yup. Congrats on cuttin/pasting- I never can get that to work on that "awesome" site, but that's where I read it.
Like I said, dubious but "its out there".
As for a move for Stallworth being a move that states "More of the same" I disagree.
The offense was FINE with him here, and they're arguably better now if they add him than the corps they had when Stallworth was last here. And he and McNabb had chemistry and seemed to like oneanother. Normally that doesnt matter, but when you have a QB that needs to be placated as does Supah 5, well, its just another 'plus' in the case for Stallworth.

I would be okay with Stallworth, but I do think that it's more of the same in some ways.
His speed makes him much more dangerous than Brown or Curtis, but he's another small guy.
I like him, but he's not a guy teams have to focus on taking away. He's a guy who DOES scare teams with speed, though.

Seth,
I don't think we're disagreeing. "More of the same" isn't neccessarily a bad thing. The Eagles were successful with Stallworth. My point was more about the philosophical mindset of the front office/Reid.
A move toward Stallworth is a move that says (via Reid), "Hey, my player moves (beyond WR) are fine. I don't see the need to change what I'm doing."
A move away from the comfortable, but unspectacular, and toward something bigger shows that there's serious self-evaulation and possibly a shift in philosophy.
I realize and wouldn't suggest getting Holt or Johnson rates "spectacular." It would be a shift if they went that direction and didn't attempt the Stallworth deal. A move toward Fitz (a spectacular move) may show that Reid has accepted the lessons of TO. To be a great offense, you need great talent . . . or the defensive signals of the opposing teams.

Some recent transactions that are quasi-interesting...
- Greg Jones signed a 1 year deal with the Jags.
- Dansby has officially been designated the team's franchise player.
- Haynesworth is expected to be franchised (not really "news").
Teams have until some time Thursday to designate franchise players.

Since the Bengals tagged Andrews, Justin smith will hit the market. Assuming Allen gets tagged, Smith will be the biggest name FA DE on the market. I am not sure if he plays LE or RE, but the guy is a stud and plays well against the run and pass.

I would classify that as a massive upset.
He's a swingman for them and Smith is their best defensive lineman...very strange.

I wasn't trying to put them in the same category other than "Unspectacular Potential Signings of 2008."
Holt's clearly the better of the two, can be a leader on offense, and has instant credibility. Johnson is marketed solely on potential.

According to the NFL Network, The Eagles are shopping Lito Sheppard.
According to NFL Live, The Eagles have given Lito permission to seek a trade.
Either way, it sounds like Lito may be on the move.

Linked, because eeb likes breaking tables.
That's a bit of a shocker, though. Would've thought Brown would've been the one on the move.

My guess, if the reports are accurate:
1. Lito requested a contract extension since he's getting paid dime corner money in the new NFL.
2. They think Lito is a potentially valuable piece they can both afford to move and potentially get a good return.
This would also make sense given the reports that the Eagles are interested in Samuel. I still don't buy that, but it would all appear to tie together.

Or what IF the eagles pull the trigger on the trade, Lito for Williams THEN not go after Samuels but back a truck load of money to Smiths door and have him line up opposite Trent Cole... then draft a CB in the 1st round, cause if you've got a D-line that will get pressure of the QB your CB's don't have to be great, and it coulc/would give a rookie time to learn to play in the NFL.
