a couple things from the fanNation site...

Is there a strike coming???

Upshaw threatens NFLPA strike
Posted: Friday February 01, 2008 07:17AM ET
The rhetoric has started in the NFL's latest labor battle, with players union boss Gene Upshaw threatening a strike as an option to combat the owners, who he expects will opt out of the collective bargaining agreement in November. As part of the last-minute deal agreed to in March 2006, either side has the right to terminate the deal in November. Upshaw listed a shutdown of the $8 billion-a-year industry as a union alternative.

Sharpe: Broncos must cut Walker
Posted: Friday February 01, 2008 06:27AM ET
Former Broncos star tight end Shannon Sharpe keeps close tabs on the team and says it needs to make a move to become a playoff team again: cut receiver Javon Walker. "I think Mike (Shanahan) will relieve himself of that situation," Sharpe said Wednesday. "It's not going to get any better there for Walker."

Well haven't seen this on any rumor site's but heard about it before from the Ravens site and apparently the idea of them trading for McNabb has some legs(unlike McNabb) on the NBC sports wrap, John Clark was talking about something Chris Mortenson had said about the Ravens having serious interest in trading for McNabb... keep tuned in sports fans...

I'm just gonna dream here, they trade McNabb for the Ravens 1st round pick (#8) and whatever else and they also bring in a play making WR like Fitz, Williams Johnson or even Holt to mentor the young guys... oh well I know it's a dream...

Also hate the idea of Spags leaving NYG's and going to Wash... that would really make the NFC East a hell of a tough division

Sending the SB Champ D coordinator to a new franchise doesn't help either franchise in the next year to two.

McNabb for a first? I know Eagle fans might fall over themselves for the trade, but I am not so sure I'd pull the trigger. Because of bad drafting, a lot of front offices have taken to over emphasizing the value of a draft pick, for certain positions.

I've seen fans on this site echo the sentiment. A first or (high) second rounder for McNabb? Impossible!

Let me ask you. Do you honestly think a team can draft a player that can give a team what McNabb can give a team (all joking aside) in the second round this year and expect an immediate contribution this season?

It cannot happen.

Many fans have not begun to look at this sport in three-five window glimpes per athlete. They think of it in franchise years or, worse, as if every player will be drafted for ten years of play.

Teams overvalue the draft pick because they have seen other franchises waste money on over-priced free agents. Many figure they can do as well in the crap shoot of the draft.

Years ago, when McNabb's "trade value" was higher, he had actual problems in his game. Teams actually used cover-0 (no safeties) against the Eagles because his receivers were never going to beat press coverage and he couldn't adjust to their second or third routes (if they even read the coverage correctly).

Now, he actually sees more of the field. He has the arm to make all the throws. He sees more of the field (or have I missed the continued use of cover-0 schemes).

McNabb for a first is a strong deal. It signals the franchise ir re-setting its clock for at least a year.

But don't think another you, as fans, wouldn't be screaming for a four, five or six time Pro Bowl QB with leg (not arm or shoulder) injuries for the price of a mid first round pick. Every fan, deep in their heart, think's their team is one or two proven players from a legit shot. McNabb, believe it or not, is worth the draft pick.

But that's why they won't trade him for the "precious," as you call them here.

The Mort rumor is the #8 pick is involved for McNabb, but nothing else is set in stone. Mort also reported the are considering a second option in Derek Anderson, but he'd likely cost a 1st and 3rd.

My thought process depends almost 100% on Kolb.

What do you have there? They drafted him. They watched him practice all year. What do they really have in him? If they honestly believe he's the real deal...a franchise-type player who they can win with now (given a good running game and defense), then they should deal McNabb for something like the 8th overall pick.

A smaller, but serious consideration is what you can get with the 8th overall pick. Do you feel there is an impact player there? If you think there are 5 bonafide stars in this draft, the 8th overall pick doesn't mean nearly as much.

If the offer is real, it's definitely something to consider but it really comes down to Kolb. McNabb isn't losing games for them, but he's not winning as many either...if you think Kolb is ready, you're willing to lean on the running game, and you can get a good pick, you have to consider it.

It's also the message you're sending out to the rest of the team.

I don't think Kolb is ready to make a run right now, even if they lean heavily on the running game (and we can't realistically expect Westbrook to have bigger #s next year). If they trade 5, any talk of them "loading up" for one final run doesn't really take shape, especially when the guy you're trading away is the main one that came out and said he needs more players.

If they're serious about one more run, McNabb's gotta be there.

It all depends.

If they really think Kolb is ready, add 2 first round picks, trade for a guy like Roy Williams or Fitzgerald, and make another name acquisition in FA, you can still sell the team.

It just depends on Kolb because part of the sales job will be whether or not he has the presence to make the veterans believe.

I do get what you're saying, though. Theoretically, and probably in the minds of the veterans, McNabb gives them a better shot this year.

Well IF the rumors are true and Harbaugh learned from Reid that picks are to important then my guess they go for McNabb to save a draft pick...

As far as Kolb being ready he is, because they will run the team the way that they ran it when McNabb was hurt call a balanced game and not lean on the QB to win just not lose the game... he was a 4 year starter in college and a full year to learn the offense, so he's either ready or he's a bust IMO. I think the team will rally and follow the kids lead what little I've hard about Kolb is that he is a natural leader and a solid QB fundamentally

Fancy rumors and notes from Taco Beill

- Jim Mora Jr. will coach the Seahawks after Holmgren is done. Thought this kind of stuff was illegal?
- Gregg Williams will coach the D of the Jags.
- Spags is using the Skins to up his price with the Giants. You'd figure that he'd do the same thing that Garrett did in Dallas, but they're also saying that Snyder might take over, using all the stuff he learned from Joe Gibbs.

Bengals can't afford to trade Chad
Posted: Wednesday February 06, 2008 08:11AM ET
Simply put: The Bengals can't afford to trade Chad Johnson. The Bengals would take an estimated $8 million hit on their salary cap in 2008 if they trade or release Johnson, a move the seven-year veteran wide receiver repeatedly has implied he wants. Trading or terminating Johnson's contract would cost the Bengals some $8.03 million in salary cap space this year, according to figures obtained Tuesday by The Enquirer. In other words, if Johnson is not with the Bengals in 2008, the club would have $8 million in dead money against the salary cap of $116 million because of the acceleration of bonus money already paid to Johnson. The Bengals cannot get that money back from Johnson and must account for it toward the cap.

The Cap hit won't be that bad actually...Per PFT last week...

POSTED 4:19 p.m. EST, February 5, 2008

CAP HIT FOR TRADING CHAD WOULD BE MANAGEABLE

Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Bengals would face a cap charge of $8.03 million by trading receiver Chad Johnson. But Curnutte doesn't address two important details that would reduce the practical consequences in 2008.

First, assuming that the number quoted by Curnutte reflects only the gross cap acceleration, the net hit would be $4.78 million, given that the Bengals wouldn't have to pay Johnson his $3.25 million salary in 2008.

Second, much of the acceleration can be deferred if Johnson is traded after June 1. Under the pre-2006 CBA, this wasn't the case; any trade resulted in a full acceleration of all remaining signing bonus money. Under the current labor contract, only the current year's bonus allocation applies if the player is traded after June 1. The rest of the unallocated signing bonus money would hit the cap in the next year.

Also, we need to pick a fairly minor nit with Curnutte's report. He says that Johnson would forfeit his $3.25 million salary if he is traded or released. If he is traded, however, the new team would inherit Johnson's contract, and would owe him $3.25 million in 2008.

Finally, even if the full cap hit were $8.03 million, we're talking about the Bengals here. Trading or cutting Johnson before June 1 would make it easier for the cost-conscious Bengals to satisfy the mandatory salary floor without having to spend all of the requisite dollars in the current cap year.

Anyone hearing anything about the FO making a play for Roy Williams on the Detroit Lions? Curious.... Those of us outside of "The City" don't get to take "the pulse"

Those of us inside and near "The City" hear that the fans would like the team to acquire Roy Williams, Chad Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, or any receiver with a pulse.

However, the team would like to remind you that Kevin Curtis topped 1,000 yards, Reggie Brown is "a star in the making," Reno Mahe is "a heckuva player," and free agents and traded players are "another team's garbage."

Now that L.J. Smith has been tagged, the team is "net ahead" and salivating over drafting a backup guard in the first round, the mere thought of which has already caused them to start planning a Broad Street parade...for 2015.

Spags gets a 3 year deal in NY, at $2 mil per. Links are everywhere; pick one.

Some might think that he may have missed his opportunity getting a HC gig, but I don't think so - he's certainly on the short list of people to take over if/when Coughlin leaves, and it's not as if people won't look back at the superb job he did in the SB.

He got the Skins to up his price and it worked - and besides, he got rewarded for a job well done.

from rotoworld....

The Broncos haven't spoken to Javon Walker's agent since the end of the season. The Denver Post expects him to be cut or traded within a month.
Walker isn't going to to take a paycut to stay in Denver. Considering the health of his knee, we seriously doubt that any other team will trade for him. Look for Walker to hit the open market. Feb. 8 - 10:52 am et

I think, of all the speculation throughout this site regarding the wide receiver position, Javon Walker is the most likely target of the FO. coming off a down, injury plagued season, they can get him on the cheap for a 1 year deal. Walker is young enough, the question is whether his knee will allow him to be a top 10 WR in this league...

With the NFL season over, attention shifts from the fields to the front offices, and few general managers face more challenges over the next few weeks than the Cardinals' Rod Graves does. Those three potential deals are for receiver Larry Fitzgerald and linebackers Karlos Dansby and Calvin Pace. Dansby and Pace are due to become unrestricted free agents at the end of the month, but the Cardinals are expected to put the franchise tag on Dansby, severely restricting his options in free agency. Pace is expected to test his worth on the market. The linchpin to the Cardinals off-season plans is Fitzgerald, because the impact of negotiations with his agent, Eugene Parker, will reverberate through the roster. Even with the salary cap expected to increase $7 million, to $116 million this year, Fitzgerald's cap numbers ($16.5 million and $19.25 million) would cause the Cardinals considerable financial problems over the next two years.

Well it looks like the Cards are serious about trying to redo Fitz's contract...

Don't know where the guys from "1st and 10" heard this but they were talking about Randy Moss becoming a UFA and where he would sign. The panel was split between he will stay in NE and go where the money is... BUT the thing that caught me by surprise was that they said the Eagles were very interested in Moss and were going to throw a boat load of money towards him...

take it for what it's worth, not sure where they heard this rumor but to me it shows the same old Eagles(sort of) I personally think Moss stays in NE and I think most people feel that way, so what does it hurt the Eagles to float a rumor that they are going to go after Moss, knowing that most likely he's staying put. It "shows" that they are going after a WR for the team; OR they really are going to go after a WR Moss or someother REAL WR... not another #2... Time will tell
