Of course.

This would be a brainless move by an organization that looks to be (somewhat) improving if they don't get it done.

But it's an absolute no-brainer if that's what it takes to get him in Philly.

its not so brainless. AZ has a lot of holes to fill and anything they give to fitzgerald will obviously (as seth pointed out) create discourse with Boldin.

How long are both signed for? Figure that since Fitz is younger and Boldin's contract goes through 2010 (if Fitz's doesn't end sooner), that they have a bit of room to deal with Boldin until his contract expires. They probably won't be able to retain both for too much longer, so why not go for the younger player?

B/c in this case the younger player doesn't stand to gain anything by restructuring his contract with them

Either way Fitz is getting a brand spanking new contract that will probably make him the highest paid WR in the league. The chances of it coming from the Cardnals (who historically have been the cheapest franchise in the history of the NFL under the Bidwells) who will very soon be in a similiar situation with Boldin (said situation gets expedited if they do ink Fitz) seems to be anything BUT a lock. The cardnals have a lot of holes, specifically on the Offensive line. They also have guys like Dansby, on the defensive side of the ball that will probably hit the FA market because of the Bidwells refusal to give him a LT deal.

Lets put it this way, they will certaintly listen to offers and if the Eagles come strong, there is no telling what will happen.

Other potential teams:
-Dolphins
-Minny
-Jacksonville

Ocho Cinco was on Jim Rome today and make it very apparent that he wants out of Cincy. Rome tried to get more out of him but Johnson just kept saying "I'll let Drew handle it". He also said he was made the scapegoat for the team's failures.

If Philly is going to land a #1 WR, they have a much better chance of getting CJ than Fitzgerald. Hell, the chance of getting Fitzgerald is zero, I don't know why folks keep running with that pipe dream.

Fitzgerald is at least 2X the receiver that Boldin is at this point. If the Eagles could land either of them for their first round pick, they should do it without thinking for even one second.

That said...there is no way in hades that I forsee either of them playing in Philadelphia next year. Ah, but I can dream I suppose

In order, I'd want:

- Larry Fitzgerald
- Ocho Cinco

Here's another update:

POSTED 11:31 p.m. EST, January 30, 2008

FITZ WOULD BE FINE WITH PHILLY

Though Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald wants to stay in Arizona, he told WIP radio on Wednesday that the Philadelphia Eagles are one of four other teams for which he'd be happy to play, if he is traded.

It remains to be seen whether the Cardinals will try to trade Fitzgerald. Due to escalators in his contract, he's scheduled to earn salaries of $14.59 million in 2008 and $17.355 million in 2009. That's nearly $32 million over two years, and then he'll hit the open market at only 26 years of age.

The Cardinals could, if they so choose, pay him the money for the next two seasons. But it would then cost more than $20 million to retain his rights via the franchise tag for the 2010 season.

There's no good way out of this for the Cardinals. Even if they want to extend his deal, the price to do so would have to be enormous. He's already in position to earn $30 million between now and September 2009, at which time his full salary for that season would become guaranteed. Thus, anything less than $30 million in guaranteed money as part of a new long-term contract makes no sense.

That same line of thinking applies to any other team, however. If he's traded, he still has a contract that pays him huge money over the next two years. What team would want to give up draft picks for the privilege of having their nuts promptly dropped into a vise?

So it could be that Fitzgerald finishes out the deal, pockets the $30 million, and then lets the market dictate his worth for 2010 and beyond.

Meanwhile, whoever authorized the Cardinals to sign Fitzgerald to a contract with escalators like that needs to be fired. Then again, maybe he already was, after the 2006 season.

fd, im with you...
however i would add holt to the list, ahead of 85, below fitzgerald. Fitzgerald would be #1, but it does seem very unlikley that the Eagles will give up a #1 and 30 mill guarenteed for a WR when guys like stallworth and berrian will be available for much cheaper...

Fun to speculate....which player would require more compensation to require.....
William or Fitzgerald?

Roy Williams is No. 1, 2 and 3 for me.

Then Fitz.

I don't want Holt. I just think he's used up and his speed doesn't show up outside the dome anymore.

Between Williams and Fitz? It would depend, but I think Williams has better tools for this offense.

Fitzgerald would be a better fit if they fed the offense through him and got his his 100 catches, but i think Roy Williams would be more dangerous after the catch in the T.O.-type role.

I wouldn't kick either out of bed, though.

Per Taco Bell and PFT:

So while the team's options are limited, discipline can be imposed. And a league source with knowledge of the dynamics of the Bengals front office predicts that the current situation could eventually result in a T.O.-style feud.

"Mike Brown won't trade him under any circumstances," the source said. "They will let him sit and rot."

Clearly, the Eagles would benefit from a young stud at WR. When I suggest Holt, I do it with the understanding that:

1) The top WRs are unreachable and
2) Something better than going into 08 with the same WRs.

Holt offers the Eagles what they don't have and cant' develop: a seasoned pro to teach the kids how to prepare for an NFL game and, more importantly, how to talk a QB's language. If the Eagles can land Roy Williams or Fitz, they should pull the trigger even if if appears like a swindle on the other team's part. Why?

Because the Eagles have drafted consistantly for replacement players and in tough to fill spots, they've actually done well. What Castillo does with the line is nothing short of remarkable when you consider it. They find undrafted and unwanted CBs like pennies in a couch.

The only critical area they haven't developed players is WR. Take the beating, make the trade, and fill the need for the next five years, rather than another waste of WR talent via draft. The Eagles cannot develop WRs. This isn't a newsflash to many here, but it seems to escape the notice of Reid and Company.

Well apparently Chad is not only unhappy but really believes that only two people in Cincy have his back TJ and Carson...

Q: Who does have your back?

A: T.J. (Houshmandzadeh) has my back. Carson (Palmer). That's it. That's really it.

This is a quote from:
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080131/SPT02/801310333/1062/SPT

Really does seem like he wants out in a bad way, and IMO I don't recall any issues other than his "celebrations", and to me that's fine, because the only time he causes the team a problem is AFTER he scores??? OK by me... unless there is something I'm forgeting

There have been a lot of stories about near fights in the locker room.

With Chad Johnson, I'm just not sure. He wants a new deal if he gets dealt. He's 30. He's a headache. You know going in he's got maybe 3 years left as a playmaker (if that).

I just don't know what to think about him. Great player, but you have to weigh the risk/reward on how many problems he'll cause, how much money you're going to pay him, and how much longer he can actually play.

Every year it seems like the topic of offseason discussion is which WRs are available on the market. Really, I'd be happy to wind up with any WR that I've actually heard of on the roster. Hell, I'd even be happy with a WR who's NFL bio doesn't consist of "spent 4 years on the practice squad before being cut".

I just don't know what to think about him.

Given that this team doesn't do well with bullish personalities, CJ would just be a bad fit. Not to mention that it seems as if even if the team he's on is going to the SB, he'll find something else to complain about.

I don't want that headache - not because of CJ or because of what he might be able to bring to the team (which will be less than TO, no doubt) - but because of all the bruhaha that will run all over and how the team will "respond". We know what they "can't" do, and it's a mess expecting change.

I like Walker, but he's been an injury disaster.

Not sure you can count on much.

If I was a team like the Cowboys, he would be much more interesting.
