Since you're having a problem with that comment, I'll elaborate.
Some teams, especially crappy teams like the Texans, buy into hype when making some decisions. There is a pretty long track record of this with the hotshot backup QB, too, as mentioned above.
Nowhere does that suggest all decisions are made based on hype.

And nowhere did I suggest that Schaub is "just some guy". I said we have no way of knowing what he is.

Or in some cases, they may go AGAINST hype, even if some of it is founded, such as the Williams pick.

I believed you point was that the Texans made this decision solely on "unfounded hype". As much as I find the Texans FO dismally shitty, I cant imagine they make this decision on unfounded hype. My question is that if you can only know that a player is legit from his game day experience, how are teams supposed to make any roster decisions focusing on the future of the franchise.
Its all repetitive, I'm sorry for misinterpreting what you said, lets move on.

No, that was not my point. I said it was a possibility, especially considering the front office involved. But yes, let's move on.

Teams definitely get caught up in the hype.
I don't know if that's the case here, but we know it happens. Free agency (for the few couple weeks, at least) is all about hype.
I mean, does anyone think the Redskins watched hundreds of miles of film on Adam Archuleta and said "This guy is worth the biggest contract ever paid to his position!".
BTW, the reason it's so well known that Schaub is a "great prospect" is the Falcons have been setting up this deal for 2 years.
Has anyone ever received more mileage for 1 great start?
The Falcons did the same thing with Doug Johnson before Schaub, by the way. They had MANY teams convinced he was a starter just "unfortunately buried" on the depth chart, but one who could had for the right price. It's really smart strategy and Schaub is a better prospect than Johnson, but there is a pattern of this in Atlanta.

Not only that, but the Falcons tendered Schaub with 1st and 3rd compensation.
(BTW, I'm still looking for what I've said, and I'm running into rumors about Schuab, and this is what I've found so far:
One of the big questions this off-season was whether or not GM John McKay would be willing to part with back-up quarterback Matt Schaub. There are several teams interested in Schaub including the Vikings, but McKay seems reluctant to give him up. I know that considering the fragileness of Michael Vick, having a quality back-up quarterback is essential for the Falcons, but passing on a first round draft pick for a back-up anything is even beyond my comprehension. )
Anyway, raise the price, maybe someone will think it's worth it. Like the PlayStation 3.

I didn't realize this guy had this much potential and he's not played much. If he was "scouted" so heavily, then somebody would have seen more out of him in college.
I can only liken the attempt at getting the "jump" like the Falcons giving up their #3 QB Brett Favre about 45 years ago.
Who knows. I'm not as sold.

One more thing to consider, and I'm just throwing it out here -
Would Vick net you two more spots, a 2nd, and next year's second?
I know it's not totally fair to point that out, since Schaub is a better "quarterback" than Vick, but for a backup QB to command MUCH more than the starter? Would Vick even net a 1st right now?
(Some) Hype.

And yes, Schuab has more value as a quarterback than Vick.
I'm still haggling on the price.
Though I think the contract seems fair, especially if it's backloaded like most NFL contracts.

"Actually, how well have they ever stopped the opponent's rushing attack in a playoff loss? It's awfully strange because the Eagles have had one very obvious weakness over the last 7 or so years (defense against the run) yet each offseason they do nothing to improve on that weakness. Wait, that's not true. They do draft and occasionally trade for or sign undersized defensive players, even though logic tells you that undersized players have a harder time stopping the run. Funny how logic keeps beating the Eagles in the playoffs every...single...year. To quote Philly fav Ben Franklin, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
Thanks Talon. No truer words have evey been spoken. Fact is, we Eagles fans continue to buy into losing the same way each year yet some here repeatedly defend the team by harping on the supposed success of the team.

It's funny, but I really think that fantasy football played a role in this trade.
Hear me out. The reason I know, or think that I know, much of anything about Schaub is because of the uproar in fantasy football over his value. With the fantasy sports pushing deeper into mainstream use each year, it gives ESPN and others more reason to cover certain events for a national audience that probably wouldn't have cared just three or five years ago. Now they even run fantasy stat crawls on MNF.
Schaub was a big fantasy football QB story, and the machine (hype, spin, fact - your pick) was mostly set into motion from that level of interest.

Picked this one up over on ESPN. Surely it can't be true, but I can dream, can't I?
Word on the street is Darwin and a 3rd for Briggs. i dont see banner springing for the kind of deal Briggs wants but if this goes through it would be GREAT!!!!
If they actually do this, then draft another young LB (Punxsatawney) to groom as well, I'd have to start having hope again.

I think he means the ESPN messageboard, which is the written equivalent of people calling up Eskin and wanting to trade Kevin Ollie and a 2nd for Wade.

If the fact that Eagles hate LBs, hate signing bonuses, and hate giving away the precious doesn't seal that one for you, how about this:
His agent is Rosenhaus.

The rumored deal is Justin Tuck and a 3rd for Wilson.
I didn't realize Wilson was nearly 30. He can still play, obviously, but time flies...

I found this on the Detroit Free Press wesite: Let's git r done
DENVER — Al Wilson’s new agent confirmed Thursday night that the Denver Broncos are shopping around for a trade partner but that a deal for the star middle linebacker isn’t imminent.
The NFL Network reported Thursday that talks with the New York Giants have heated up after the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles showed strong interest.
“It’s a little premature. There are a number of teams that are interested in Al — Al is a player who is definitely in high demand — but no decision has been made even whether Al will be traded,” Denver-based agent Peter Schaffer told the Associated Press. “There’s a number of moving parts. We’re just going to take it one move at a time.”
The Broncos, whose policy is not to discuss personnel matters in the offseason, could move D.J. Williams inside to replace Wilson, an eighth-year pro from Tennessee who was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl last season.
Schaffer has worked to try to facilitate a trade for Wilson, who is due $5.2 million in base salary next season, since the linebacker switched agents last week. Schaffer said he wants to make sure Wilson winds up in the best situation, whether that be in Denver or elsewhere.
“The Giants have expressed interest,” Schaffer said. “We’re exploring all options. We want to make a decision that’s best in Al’s short-term and long-term interests.”
Wilson had a team-best 113 tackles last season, including 88 solo, with five sacks, a forced fumble and six pass breakups.
A fan favorite, Wilson also is a locker room leader and elder statesman on the team. He spoke at the funerals of cornerback Darrent Williams and running back
Damien Nash this offseason, two teammates who died at age 24.
The Broncos have committed big bucks to several free agents this month and might want to free up money by dealing Wilson, a player who would command a high return.
“Al Wilson is the consummate professional. He understands the business side of the game. He also understands the Broncos have treated him eminently fairly throughout the course of his career,” Schaffer said. “There’s a business side of it. He certainly has nothing but admiration and respect for the fans of Denver and the
Broncos organization.
“He’s had a wonderful run here — and I’m not by any means saying that run is over. It may continue.”
