"Owning Mahowny". This is a true story. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a bank manager in Toronto who keeps approving fake loans, and then taking the money to A.C. or Vegas and gambling it away. The guy seriously had a problem. There is a scene towards the end where he's gambling with $9 million that will drive you nuts. See it, though. Minnie Driver and John Hurt are also in it.

"Girl with a Pearl Earring". Really boring. Fictional story about the creation of the real painting. It tried too hard to be a period piece, so there were a ton of unnecessary dramatic pauses.

"Ikiru". It's an older one (1952). I like the FIRST 2 hours, but the last hour was just way too drawn out. After finding out he's terminally ill with cancer, a government official quits his job and prepares to face his last year alive, devoid of family or friends. Determined not to die alone, he heads to a bar to get drunk for the first time. Hoping to drink himself to death, he instead meets an artist who takes him to bars all over the city, and later, a female co-worker sways him on the value of leaving a legacy.

"Gothika". Crap

Long, what kind of porn are you watching to think that you need a massive amount of bloodshead in it?

I'm not talking about literal, sexual pornography. What I meant was that Tarantino's movie uses provocative imagery -- gushing fountains of blood, for instance -- to such a point that the imagery stops appealing to the intellect and triggers lower, baser feelings. Put simply, like with sexual pornography, over-the-top violence similarly makes it hard to take your eyes off the screen, when all the while a small voice in your head says, "This is wrong. I should not watch this."

Not that I have anything against pornography or violence -- far from it. I am just acknowledging that looking at porn for a while triggers almost subconscious feelings of guilt. Tarantino's ode to mutilation and blood had some of that feeling going on after a bit.

Incredibly graphic violence devoid of context or consequence. I think that sums it up better than my previous post.

Long, I think you are missing the campiness factor of Kill Bill. Tarrantino takes the violence over-the-top, way over-the-top, quite possibly further than any other American director has ever gone. At a certain point, it becomes somewhat comical. Now, I will admit that the anime sequence in Vol. I is one of the most disturbing and horrific things I've ever seen on film, but there is a lot of humor in that movie.

I saw Vol. II last night, and Lyte is right. There's a lot less blood and gore, and there's much more humor/camp to it. I think I enjoyed the first part a little bit more (maybe because some of it was so shocking), but the second installment is definitely worth seeing and a lot of fun. Tarrantino uses some of his classic tricks with great success.

I also saw Fahrenheit 9/11 this morning, and it was both enjoyable and disturbing, as expected. I would say that everyone should see this film because there is a lot that can be taken from it, regardless of political affiliation. Moore really nails almost everyone in the federal government (in both parties), as well as the mainstream media (and not just FOX).

It's important to recognize that this is not a piece of journalism-- he's not supposed to present both sides. Rather, this is more like a cinemagraphic op-ed piece with tremendous footage, evidence, and profound questions. I definitely lean to the left, but I don't agree with a lot of the conclusions that Moore gently suggests. However, there is some stunning footage in the film, and you will definitely leave the theater with lots of important questions.

And KB, you need to slow down a bit. You're going to singlehandedly destroy the business plan for Netflix! Speaking of, you need to rent Cinemania. It's a documentary on film addicts (and I hope you are not as sick as these people). They were all patrons at the theater where I used to work, and these people are really twisted.

I really liked I, Robot. Good plot, moves well, good action/cgi, and it makes you think, while adding an element of mystery.

I can't help it. I mentioned in the book thread how reading is an obsessive thing with me. Movies are the same way. I have 280 movies in my Netflix Queue right now. I probably watch about 6-7 a week. Life is good.

I did see that "Cinemania". It was hilarious. That old psycho woman practically made the movie.

Lyte, what bd meant by pronographic has more to do with the rating, it was rated at NC17, and IF they had not changed the scene that goes black and white from color the rating would have gone to X... I actually was getting another tattoo on Sat. and the guy I go to has added a TV, so as I sat there I got to watch to movies, Kill Bill vol1 (he was the one that told me about the rating I'm guessing he's correct) and the other was the classic Full Metal Jacket.

KB, I had quite a few run-ins with that old psycho woman, Roberta. The first time I met her, she was at the box office, frantic because her "dual membership had been renewed, but her partner wasn't there with the receipt." I looked up her membership and discovered that she hadn't been a member of MoMA since 1988, when she was banned from the museum.

I busted her, and then she went into hysterics over how paying six dollars for this film will destroy her weekly budget. I offered, "If you can't afford the film, maybe you shouldn't go see it."

"If not for movies, what else is there to life," she responded. "What could I possibly do with my money that would be more important than seeing a movie?"

"Well, you could buy clothing, shelter, food..."

"FOOD!?!? There's plenty of good food in garbage cans!"

Hmmmmm.....

Later, she was harassing us about having to show her ticket stub to get into the next film. She had a very psychotic look in her eye, her fists were clenched, and I had already been warned about her MoMA encounter with a security guard. I told her, "Roberta, I know who you are and what you've done."

"What have they told you?"

"I know you tried to strangle a security guard."

"That's an absolute lie! I did NOT try to strangle her...I tried to KILL her!!!"

That really put me at ease.

I'm not say I look at Kill Bill and scream "PORN!!"

Just that I think the over, over, over the top stuff is titilating, but ultimately soulless.

Saw Catwoman yesterday with a few buddies. Guys went there with dates for some reason, we just went to see ass.

We saw a lot of ass shaking and tight leather and some cool CGI with a decent plot. Berry is still a POA. Stone is STILL hot even though she's like 50 now. And no, there wasn't a ripping off clothes scene, because that wouldn't be DC's style, but it was an entertaining movie that you can bring your woman to.

Saw AVP last night. It was ok. I expected a little more action to it. But it sets a few open ends for sequels. Really looking forward to Blade:Trinity. Anyone else?

In a movie starring Halle Berry, I doubt I'd notice Sharon Stone was in it no matter how good she's looking these days.

By the way, rented Hellboy, it was fair.

I couldn't stop laughing the whole movie.

Good point Seth, I think that's what I watched, he mentioned something about that, though he said the only scene he didn't remember in the movie when he saw it in the theatres was the strip club.

It makes me want to drink with a few advent calenders...

Just saw "The Insider." Fantastic movie. I'm surprised I didn't hear more about it when it came out. Pacino turns in a great performance as a producer for 60 Minutes. Christopher Plummer is awesome as Mike Wallace.

Strange to think that a movie about the breaking of the tobacacco companies coverups could be a "thriller" but it was truly an engaging flick.

Just saw "Garden State." Great movie, but only if you get off on watching interesting conversations, weird and somewhat dark humor, and some heart tuggin' moments here and there.

Zach Braff is great. Natalie Portman is just friggin' adorable.

Warning: If you can't get off on anything but action, this is not your movie.
