bass i know what you're saying, i just think he looked like lidge with the bases loaded last night. i don't think he did it b/c of his ego. i think espn promised a ton of money for charities in addition to the ads. i just think it's a situation where people are overreacting, that's all. i just don't care about it that much

I'm not torn up about it either - unlike the one Cleveland fan I heard on 1060. He was saying "I hope he never wins in Miami....he's dead to me". Brought back fond memories of the crier in the Eagles-Panthers title game.
I think he's going to ultimately regret doing that show, especially if he doesn't win anything. Which, I have to admit, would be pretty be difficult right now.
Then of course, we still don't know how the lockout will play out.

So this guy Gilbert wasn't done with that schoolgirl letter he wrote:
"He quit," Gilbert said. "Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar.""

I expect Gilbert to come out with A LOT of stuff - some of it sour grapes (otherwise, why offer him more money to stay?); some with a tinge of truth.
This is going to get ugly.

i was just talking about that article yesterday with a friend of mine. Simmons is just brutal anymroe. How hard is it to find a Steve Kerr or John Paxson? Chris Bosh couldn't get the city of Toronto excited in basketball so he's not a star. Etc. etc. etc.

I agree with you in that people will flock to Miami for the MLE just to play with these guys and win a title - I agree with Simmons in that he compares LeBron to Erving and how this is a calculated stomach punch for Cleveland.

The Cavs owner is making a fool of himself. I get that he's pissed, but have some dignity, man.
How can you offer a guy $140 million or something that that 1 minute and say he's a shitty teammate, shitty person, and quit on the court the next?

Wrong. The owner made a personal guarantee to win a championship within the next couple years.
A guarantee, KB.

So if I lay $100,000 on the Cavs at 85:1 to take the title next season, could I sue for the proceeds when they finish 14-78?

My thoughts:
- The NBA now has a clearcut villain franchise in the Miami Heat. How can anyone outside of Miami pull for this team? Can you fathom the massive disappointment and shock when this team loses their first game, let alone if they don't win the championship? Even as an NBA hater, I will watch to see them lose, just as I did when the absurdly stacked Dream Team made a mockery of competitive balance in the Olympics. I really wanted to see Barkley make good on his promise of remaining in Barcelona if they didn't win the gold medal. It was probably the only time in my life that I'll pull for Lithuania.
- This televised announcement has really caused so many people to hate Lebron and now the Heat. So many tools waited on baited breath and had their dreams crushed on national television. Now the world knows what it's like to be an Eagles fan.
- I wish you could have seen all the doe-eyed Knicks fans who'd had their hopes up because the televised announcement was in nearby Greenwich. It was so cute to see same people who root for the Yankees label this free agent signing as "collusion."
- I understand that he needed to do something to rally his rapidly dwindling fanbase, but the Cavs owner looks really petulant and childish today and has unwittingly succeeded in generating sympathy for Lebron. You can't come out with this kind of withering criticism about Lebron quitting on the team in the playoffs when you've spent weeks kowtowing to every one of Lebron's team's demands in hopes that he'll stay. After all, this is why Danny Ferry quit as their GM.
- I had originally envisioned a scenario where Lebron wins some titles in Miami and then the prodigal son returns to Cleveland to save them while Ozzy sings "Mama I'm Coming Home" on the live ESPN special, but the Cavs owner really burned that bridge with his childish letter.
- Chicago vs. Miami could become a rivalry for the ages. If the Bulls' teamwork can overcome the Heat's superstars, it just might save the NBA in the eyes of those who appreciate solid fundamental basketball, which isn't very sexy but seems to work for 65 teams every March.

Meh, he could always say he got caught up in the moment (while backing up the Brinks' truck on LeBron's front yard) and things would be gravy again.
Don't know if he'd want to come back to Cleveland - though I would admit coming back in Chicago red would've been like Favre going to Lambeau in purple. This would be slightly below that. Not that it matters, anyway, since we'll be missing an NBA season after next year.

bass, i think talon's saying the bridge is burned b/c the owner acted like a retard. he's going to get the max from a few teams, so the money wouldn't matter at that point.

Bass, not only do these athletes have incredibly fragile egos and carry around these "scars" for years (see McNabb, Donovan), but the Cavs owner looked like a fool by kissing Lebron's ass and then subsequently ripping him to shreds. If he went back to kissing his ass again in four years, he would look even worse.
Ever worked for a bi-polar boss? It's not something I'd ever choose to do again, especially if I were being courted by 29 companies.

Agreed - not saying they WILL get back together, but guys have made fools of themselves plenty of times in an effort to make money.
I just think everything going on is dumb - the hour-long special, the letter, the suspense for a guy who's gotten to the Finals once and was promptly swept; and let's not forget firing a guy who only led the team to the best record on the East. I know it has nothing to do with this, but it's just another issue. Had to figure LeBron wasn't coming back, anyway, if Tom Izzo wasn't trying to get the job.
In the end, it's all not going to matter anyway, b/c this league needs an enema in the worst way.

Dan Gilbert needs:
1) a hug
2) a new PR department
3) psychological help
4) AA meetings (possibly)
In any order.
