Grilled octopus with lemon and garlic is fantastic, a staple of Greek cuisine.


Nonsense. I tried it at supposedly a good Greek restaurant, and besides being like chewing on rubber bands, for some reason it was fouler than squid. Not an oyster fan either, but I can kill clams on the half either raw w/cocktail sauce or steamed w/ butter.

If it was *that* chewy, it was not prepared well. Octopus should be a little chewy, but it should not be difficult to eat.

A guy from Cyprus told me that when the Greeks catch the octopus, they beat it against the rocks for a long time to tenderize it, and then they grill it fresh. Obviously, you can't do that in the U.S. unless you're miraculously catching octopus off the Jersey shore. Apparently, there is a very expensive machine that looks like a mixer, and the octopus gets thrown in there and is beaten around for a while prior to grilling. Few restaurants have this machine (even many good Greek places do not have it), and that's why it's hard to get grilled octopus at the right texture.

Also, you might not have a taste for it. Like I said before, I can't eat olives, but many love them.

well talon, personally I don't expect much outta life when I'm in my 80-90's (if I live that long) I'd much rather enjoy my life, if it cuts the last couple years off, meh no biggie...
