Yup. This feels like the old Bobby Abreu debate all over again.

Flesh, I will dig up the Gammons article if you would like but sometime last week he reported that the highest teams in signing bonuses were a bunch of small market teams, which seemed to indicate that the Glory Days of "Slot-busting" and exploiting that inefficiency may be going the way of the Well-Reasoned F_B post.

Oh, and it's not just because they picked near the top of the draft.

glenn, i didn't read the article, but i strongly believe that teams are building through their farm system more than ever before. slot busting isn't the sole force behind it, but a lot of talented high schoolers fall in the draft simply because they made a commitment to college - offer a big bonus, and some change their mind. i think if you can sign a couple of those guys a year by "slot busting" it can only help your team. it ends up being the equivalent of a couple more high draft picks a draft. again, it doesn't entail $500,000 dollar signing bonuses to every late round pick, but i think its a smart way to allocate resources when you consider the exorbitant price tags of many middling free-agents.

The Tigers did get above .500. They were within 5.5 games after the All-Star break at one point. They were not done but they are now.
