Bass, I know you don't have cable, but you don't even own a radio?
He got intentionally walked and was then picked off.
Coste has to get him to third

Not near a radio - on vacation in Va beach, sitting outside near the ocean.
Even there I can't seem to pull away from this site.
And Howard.....geez man.

i really don't care much about the whole lazy v. hustle debate as long as the guy produces. i'd rather have a lazy manny on my team than almost any "hustle" player out there.
the problem with fan apprehension is that when you are struggling, you'll only get a pass if you have a rep for busting your ass.

Bill Conlin, with his least intelligent column to date, thinks the Phillies should be like the Eagles and rid themselves of veterans on a regular basis.
I guess this methodology will enable the Phillies to win as many championships as Lurie has. Yo, click it

The problem is actually developing talent to replace the veterans

exactly neag. the good news is, the phils look like they had a pretty damn good 2008 draft. they signed most of their important picks, and even busted slot to sign a 13th round pick who had said he was going to college and otherwise would have been more like a 2nd round pick.
hopefully, this portends a philosophy change with the phillies. for what they sign the rod barajas of the world, they can bust slot a few times in a draft and really begin to stock the farm.

here's a gem from hoffman's column today:
"Moments will now decide who wins the National League East -- moments, individual efforts, plays born more out of desire than ability."
oh really? so feliz' homerun last night was based on his "desire" and not so much on his ability? ok, rich, you take the team borne "more out of desire than ability", i'll take the team with more ability and talent. let's see how it shakes out, you hack.

NEAG, laptop crapped out right when I got your reply. Remebered that "Hey! I have CABLE!" and turned on the game in just enough time ti see Feliz run the bases. Great stuff.
BTW, this place is awesome. Could sit on the balcony and watch the water for hours.

Flesh, I'm not sure if you were involved in the discussion, but isn't that what everyone here was claiming when Philly made that 9th inning comeback at Shea last month? That it was all in NY's heads and they weren't tough enough to beat Philly?
I remember saying at the time, "No, this (Mets)bullpen just sucks" and being told that I was afraid to admit the truth or something...

ENY, i don't recall the conversation and i will say that its surely possible that certain players and thus teams may play better in pressure situations than others. but that also comes down to ability; there are many players with physical talent that don't succeed at the MLB level because they can't channel their emotions and deal with pressure in the most productive way. that's part of ability, not this nebulous notion of desire.
the season is about ebbs and flows for every team over the long slog, and at the end, every team ends up where they should be, based on overall TALENT (with other variables like injuries and matchups taken into account, of course).
to say its about desire first and talent second is just plain old lazy journalism exhibited by writers who would rather wax semi-poetic than do some actual research.
