"the phillies bullpen has been spectacular, but they haven't been this good generally in there careers, so i expect a falloff".
First of all, was this that fucking Loud Mouths show on SNY? If you took anything on there seriously, then you're in the wrong, period. It makes 610's morning show look like Meet the Press.
Secondly, what you wrote above is probably exactly what he meant. But we all know people don't talk like that on TV. Everything is about making the most extreme statement possible. Right now, he can go on TV tomorrow looking like a genius to 80-90% of viewers. Whoever he is.

The SNY guys are keeping the "bandbox" talk going. Harold Reynolds just called Citizens Park a Little League field, despite what I read today, which is that statistically it's the most neutral park in MLB.
it's actually a little below, but i don't want to accuse anyone of lazy journalism. they probably meant something else, like it should greatly benefit hitters even though it doesn't. i believe it's called "trending toward the mean" (not to get too sabermetric on you)

"i'm just not sure how youre not getting this, except that i believe, as neag and seth do, that you saw the pen blow a game, got real excited and decided to post. so as i said, i hope you enjoyed yourself, but you fooled no one."
Wrong. I only said something because of what you posted earlier. Only reason I "got real excited" was that I am facing Lidge in a must-win FB game. I am pretty neutral on the Phils, if you haven't figured that out yet.

Well, the article said most neutral in baseball. I believe it suppresses -.02 runs per game. Of course, that all relates back to the performance of the bullpen, so this will just go in circles...

ENY, it was on DNL. i don't know the guy's name, but he was fat and bald.
and i'm sorry, but that's not what he meant, and if he did, its's just as stupid. is the way lidge and romero have pitched really a stretch? lidge was an elite closer with the best slider in baseball who went through a funk. romero has dominated for the most part since last year. and is there any team in the MLB that wouldn't love to have durbin in their pen next year, or would they pass because, hey, wasn't that good before 2008"

Lidge's ERA is the closest to his Career. But don't make it seem like you watch Durbin or Romero in a tight spot with the confidence you would if you cheered for the Yanks and were watching Rivera. And why not? Because their careers do not lend themselves to it.

seriously, neag.
are you kidding, glenn? you're right. durbin is not as good as rivera. therefore, he's been average. or a little better than average.

I remember we were talking about Mike Tirico and Glenn told me "his wife is white and ugly as shit"
Missed this from yesterday, I walked right past them on the Streets of Syracuse after a football game not once but on two separate occasions.
f4f, you have a habit of twisting points. My point is that the NY journalist that claimed the Phils bullpen is "better than average" was not necessarily exhibiting "lazy journalism".

K, so someone watching him speak who wasn't familiar with the phils bullpen would listen to him and think "hmm... little better than average; not too great". they would thus have the wrong information, since the phils bullpen has, far, far better than average.
so maybe it's not lazy journalism, like talking about booing santa. let's call it, say, "incompetent journalism".

I can't believe this is even a debate, let alone a two page debate. The Phils have the best bullpen ERA in the league. To expect them to revert to some "mean" after 85% of the season is in the books doesn't make sense to me.
The SNY guys absolutely KILLED Cholly last night. They straight up intimated that leaving Seanez in to face Delgado could have cost them the season. I am no Manuel apologist, but with the bullpen stretched the way it was last night, you were going to have a few bad matchups, and Seanez just didn't get it done. It wasn't even a bad pitch, Delgado is just crazy right now.
They were praising the hell out of LOOGY Eyre giving them multiple innings (including facing several righties). You can't praise Eyre and then kill Manuel. You're rolling the dice in both cases.

tell me about it. and what's so amazing is, the guy never said anything about reverting to the mean! glenn just straight made it up. really one of the stupidest debates in a long time.

Ok, Flesh, let's say instead of the phrase "trending towards the mean" I had used the phrase "Maybe he was assessing the Phils bullpen players on their whole careers and not just this season".
Would that have made things more clear? And did I not pretty much spell out that that was my point in subsequent posts?

do you not see how retarded your argument sounds? he was talking about the phils bullpen. how they have performed. over the course of they year. he wasn't analyzing each bullpen member's past career. him: a little better than average. reality: best, or close to the best in the business.
we're done.

No Rumple breath here. And I am not cheering against the Phils. But Chad Durbin's ERA just took a .20 hit.
