I watched both Adams installments last night and I'm definitely in to finish.
I think it was a little overdone in spots and while I think Giamatti is a great actor, I find him a little unbelievable in this role for some reason. I couldn't tell you why, either.
I really enjoyed the guy portraying Ben Franklin. I think he was in Carnivale and some other stuff (Michael Clayton, maybe), but I thought it was a fresh take on him and found it more interesting than any other attempt at Franklin.

Gotta love Delaware's representative, BTW, Caesar Rodney. Wearing the scarf over his face, which he apparently wore to hide skin cancer.
Jefferson is a little different, no? Claims not to be much of an orator?
I am out for getting Tarred and Feathered, BTW, just in case you were wondering.

I was just sayin how awful it was to be the guy in the wagon, dragged around so i can have my open sores scraped, to vaccinate others who may survive, while i lay here gripping a crucifix , with itchy hay stabbing my wounds.
Like I dont itch enuff already if ive got the S-Pox.

The series already wrapped up, but I thought "Breaking Bad" was a pretty good series. About a guy diagnosed with terminal cancer who decides to cook meth so he can leave his family money.
AMC's done a really good job screening dramas (also Mad Men) that don't fit the cop/doctor/lawyer model that networks swear by.

I'm confused...
1. Who were the good guys?
2. What type of mysteries did the heroes of "breaking bad" solve?

Anyone been watching "In Treatment"? I find myself spacing out during parts of each episode, but overall but overall I like the format of the show and the development of the characters.

I passed Paul Giamatti on the way to work this morning, and that reminded me that I wanted to post about John Adams. I d/l'd the first two episodes this past weekend, and I really dug the gritty way they portrayed life and the political complexities of the issues. On the other hand, it did seem as though the Continental Congress parts were really truncated. Historically speaking, there was a lot of negotiating and interesting twists and developments that weren't covered. I will agree that Tom Wilkinson's portrayal of Franklin is really unique and interesting, and the spin on Jefferson is pretty accurate. David Morse is perfectly cas as Washington, and I don't know what they did to him in makeup, but he REALLY looks like Washington. I like what they've done with Samuel Adams, but I would have preferred to have seen more development for John Hancock. One moment he's igniting the crowd to tar and feather a limey, and in the next episode, he's suddenly leading the Congress as a voice of impartiality and reason. How'd he get to that point?
One thing that I wonder about is the use of dialects. I've long wondered how the Eastern Standard American dialect developed, and I think the way they have a lot of these guys using part-High British/part-Irish dialects is kind of interesting, not to mention the slight Bostonian that Giamatti uses. I wonder if there's any historical accuracy here. Why does Franklin sound Irish? If Sam and John Adams are cousins, why do they sound very different? Schooling?
Speaking of Giamatti, I have to disagree with f-d. I don't think he's a great actor at all. He's a good actor who has paid his dues and has now been given the chance to play great roles. However, I don't think his skills are all that great. Hollywood loves to pat itself on the back, and that's exactly what they've done with Giamatti. This is an instance where Hollywood is saying, "Isn't it great that we cast this ugly guy? Isn't he wonderful despite the fact that he's not good looking?" They want you to believe that
A) Giamatti is a great actor.
and
B) Hollywood is so wonderfully inclusive now because they're casting him in lead roles, when the reality is that they're not giving that many unattractive people these kinds of opportunities.
I think he typically does a credible job, but I really don't think he has a tremendous amount of depth or range. He's a far cry from his primary competition in the ugly dude follies, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Giamatti is just very fortunate that the stars aligned for him after years of obscurity.
Sometimes he does a really weird Al Jolson-like thing with his voice that irritates the Hell out of me, but the accent masks that here. I remember the dreadfully painful Saturday Night Live episode he hosted made me want to kick a hole in the TV.
I think he tends to overact a bit, which isn't so much of a problem when he plays the kind of character roles that he should be playing. He's not a leading man type at all, although I think his overacting works as a bombastic windbag like John Adams, but he falls short when the scene calls for emotional pathos. Contrast him with the subtlety of Laura Linney, who is outstanding, and they occasionally look like they're in different series.

Talon, I don't think he's as good as PSH and maybe "great" was overdoing it.
I still think he's good and I specifically remember liking him in:
- Private Parts
- Sideways
- Man on the Moon
- Cinderella Man
That's not exactly the greatest resume in Hollywood and he was secondary character in most of those, but that's 5 major memorable/good roles in 10 years (IMO). I think that's not too shabby.
PSH is another category altogether, I think. Without a doubt his best in a long string of good roles had to be Scotty from Boogie Nights.

I liked him in all of those roles, as well. American Splendor was really the one that launched this second phase of his career and took him out of the "asshole executive" niche and into the limelight.
And Scotty was definitely the apex of P.Sey's career.

Completely different shows.
Top Chef is a semi-legit cooking competition and Hell's Kitchen is Gordon Ramsay calling people "fat, sweaty donkey".

The first season of Hell's Kitchen blew any Top Chef season away. You had people who actually were chefs competing, and Ramsay was trying to get them to be better than they could be on their own.
Now they put people who can't even boil water in there and expect them to become top rate chefs by the end. It's gone way downhill.

First time I ever watched Mr. Gordon Ramsey's show was last nite.
I have to say I really liked it.
I actually admire his restraint in some cases.
It can be incredibly frustrating when you have an idea of how things are supposed to be/go, and the people you're left with to carry that out are incompetent for whatever reason.
I love the fact he can yell and hollar and generally act like an ass as a means to release that frustration.
Strangely satisfying for me, tho Im sure Im derriving unintended enjoyment from the show and instead i should be caught up in who gets voted off or whatever.
BTW, Bobby was BRUTAL and CLEARLY shoulda gotten the heave ho.
As for Idol--- meh. Heard it was Dolly nite and passed. Are you kiddin?
Plus it seems they're intent on Givin the title this yr to that little Eddie Munster lookin kid, in whom i have no interest- as a singer or in an NEAG kinda way.
OUT.

NTF.
I've actually watched the whole season (because, uh, my wife makes me, yeah that's it) and I feel like I am detached from reality when I hear what the judges say to him. He's just a boring, average singer. But I've come to terms with the fact that American Idol doesn't have an endgame. It's pretty useless to criticize their "plants" and their popularity contest and their narrow scope on musical talents. None of them matter.
It's not a search for undiscovered artists. It's not a democracy to see who will be the next big star. It's not even a way for record labels to see what people want. It has very little to do with music, at all. It's basically a weekly concert that's held just to get ratings. Nobody cares about the winner and the subsequent record sales they make. Not Simon Fuller, not any of the judges, not the producers of the show. The only thing that matters is that we tune in every week to see the Ford commercials and enjoy the competition aspect of it.
And that's OK.
