Ripped directly from Fark.com:
Katrina evacuee mom leaves +/- 10 kids home alone to get married in Africa to a man she met on the Internet. She would have left her older kids in charge, but they're in jail.
FEMA Dollars well spent
Some Highlights? Certainly...
A deputy making a welfare check at a home in the 11000 block of Barker Grove Lane in Cypress about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday found six children between the ages of 1 and 9 alone inside, Martin said.
"What he found inside the house was just deplorable conditions. There was trash everywhere, roaches everywhere. He said every item of clothing in the house was dirty and there was very little food."
"The children were given no way to contact the mother, even if there was some kind of emergency," he said.
Later on Wednesday night a 15-year-old girl arrived at the house and told authorities her mother had flown to Nigeria on New Year's Eve.
The teen said her mother left her in charge of four siblings — a 1-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy, an 8-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, said Estella Olguin, a spokeswoman for Child Protective Services. The teen was also caring for a neighbor's 3-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl, Olguin said.
"There was no food in the home and mom didn't leave them any money," Olguin said. "The 15-year-old said she had to steal food and diapers."
The burden of caring for the others fell on the teenager because her older sister, who is 16, spends most of her time out of the house with friends and her 14-year-old and 18-year-old brothers are serving time in juvenile detention and prison for robbery and aggravated assault, respectively...
Stellar.

Wow, $77 billion from the City of New Orleans (aka Atlantis). Mayor "Wonka" sure likes those zeros.

Hopefully another Cat5 comes and wipes out the rest of these whiners.
YOU LIVE IN A BASIN BELOW SEA LEVEL IN A HURRICANE ZONE.
Every once in a while, you're going to roll snake eyes in a place like that thanks to God summoning a hurricane against you.

it's not a problem in the netherlands, where almost half the country is below sea level.
it was only a problem in NO because we choose to ignore it.

How many hurricanes go after the Netherlands? There are strong North Sea storms, but nothing like a big hurra.

No, yet they still built everything up much, much stronger than New Orleans was. That doesn't make sense.

The Netherlands never had 3 category 5 storms in a year their whole country is about the size of Jersey so I'm not surprised they made it a priority.
Also, do you know how they came to the conclusion they needed these systems in place?

Yeah, the 1953 North Sea tragedy. Last time I checked, New Orleans was smaller than New Jersey

Yeah, but the survival of our entire civilization doesn't depend on 1 city along a coast.
And yes, the flood of 1953 where 100K people had to be evacuated and over 2,000 or their 10 million total Dutch citizens died.

No, I know f-d, it was a lame joke.
But it's not the city's resident's fault that New Orleans was poorly protected. State and federal both messed up. You'd think they would have learned after one time.

It would be great if they did something about it before, but I wouldn't hold them responsible.
Tragedies happen and sometimes it's not anyone's fault. I think I'm just offended by the notion that people deserve reparations for an act of God (an such ridiculous numbers at that).
Where's the personal responsibility in all this (if we're laying blame)? They chose to live in a hurricane zone and the mother of all hurricanes happened to swing by. Sucks, but it happens.

I think "chose to live" is a tough phrase. I mean, most of these people really can't afford to up and move to a new city.
They've had horrible hurricanes, it's been obvious that hurricanes have been getting stronger in recent years, and the US Corps admitted to the levees, built for weaker storms, were poorly constructed.

So you mean they had to live there because they were too broke to live outside the potential flood zone and because of that fact, the Government should direct $20 billion there for a better dam?
Work harder + Uhaul = you don't die in a flood.
Do nothing + flood survival = 50 quadrillion dollars in "free money".

They wrongly assumed the levees were built correctly, that's their biggest crime, as far as I see it.
To me, when someone admits their to blame for something, I usually assign the blame to them, that's all. They could have done it correctly the first time, and they failed, and they know it. That's where I put the blame, that's all.

And I think it's much more complicated than "work harder" too, as my arguments in other threads have shown.

Blame them if you want, but to what end?
Are they financially responsible to these people for not building a free superfort for their filthy, worthless homes?

Or it is like choosing to live in Appalachia and wake up with Billy Bob like this woman:
Woman Assaulted While Sleeping
POSTED: 9:05 pm EST January 6, 2008
UPDATED: 9:11 pm EST January 6, 2008
A Cambria County woman woke up to find a man with his hands in her pants and exposing himself to her.
The incident happened early Sunday morning in Blacklick Township. State police say 31-year-old Jessie Fredrick of Strongstown entered the woman's home Sunday morning before assaulting her. The woman woke up and began to scream. She told Fredrick to leave, which he did. He was later taken into custody and arraigned.
At least when she said no, he left and went home.
