Good bounce back season that honestly surpassed my expectations at the midpoint.

The Pens are going to be a strong team for a long time.

It has been the hardest truth to learn in this quarter-century, in these hundred seasons - that there is no carryover from season to season, that momentum is for chumps. The notion of a methodical building process, of one result somehow guaranteeing a better result in the future, is pure myth.

Once upon a time, you could write a column about Ed Snider and Bob Clarke being able to stand there and see to the horizon after the first playoff run by Eric Lindros - but you read it now and laugh. And think back to all of the times that all of us used the phrase "52 yards away" when talking about the early Eagles under Andy Reid, or talked about how it was somehow meaningful that Donovan McNabb sneaked back to watch the St. Louis Rams celebrate a trip to the Super Bowl, to immerse himself in the experience. It was all such naivete.

There is no carryover. There is no link between deserving it and winning it. There is no such thing as "it's our turn." There are no rules about this, no laws - especially, in the case of Philadelphia sports teams, no law of averages.

~

When I read stuff like this I kind of feel sorry for the young folks (born after 1983) who have yet to get a taste of what it's like to go to the parades or experience the feeling you have like you are floating on air after a championship. I got to experience that feeling 4 times in my life and it is a feeling I will never forget and wanted to feel again and again. I hope my 11 year old gets to experience that feeling of euphoria someday soon.

Who are really feel sorry for are both of my grandfathers which neither one lived long enough to see the Phillies win a world series. They watched that team there entire lives but were never rewarded with anything but a sweep from the Yanks in 1950.

I also feel bad for my friend who just passed away this year (45 yo) who will never see the Eagles win the Super Bowl. RIP bro.

I will give my friends who are Pens fans some credit, as even they were questioning the calls yesterday. It just looks like bad officiating, not a bias against Philly, and until the Flyers learn to start diving, they're gonna have a hard time getting on the power play against these teams.

Diving is not the answer.

It is playing a full 60 minutes of hockey.. Even down three goals tonight there was no quit in the Stars. The busted ass until the horn sounded.

The Flyers have the making of a good nucleus around them to build on. Need to get faster on the D. The rookies with the pension of letting their emotions get to them learned its 2 minutes on your ass in the "big leagues."

It will be very interesting to see what Philly does with their $49mil in the off season..

GO FLYERS..

GO REDWINGS!!! Crush the effin Pens!

I didn't really see them quitting on games. Granted, I essentially quit on them in the third period on Sunday and watched the rest while doing other things.

However, they were up against a clearly superior team that was significantly faster. You couple that with an inability to get on the power play and spending a lopsided amount of time on the penalty kill, and it's going to be rather tough to win.

I think Mowdry, Smith and Vinny The P are gone.

I think they'll keep Parent up there (obviously) and that they will still need some speed on D.

Im more concerned with keeping Carter, RJ and Jones than I am signing the next best FA when F.A. begins tho.

Oh, and I think they'd have Hatcher back if he could clear the medical screeners. And would he be against taking a pay cut?

Isnt he due 3+ million next yr?
What did play this yr, 40 games?

I can just as easily see him retire.

I think guys write crap like this just to generate attention.

Anyone who watches hockey knows that the fighting, which is becoming increasingly extinct, is no more "barbaric" than boxing. A lot of the time, the two fighters are laughing afterwards. It's not about being dirty-- it's about fulfilling a role, and while fighting may be part of a sideshow, it still rallies the troops.

Not really, just locks him up until his unrestricted free agency-- NHL players aren't eligible for UFA until they've played six years.

The Flyers today acquired defenseman Janne Niskala from Nashville in exchange for forward Triston Grant and the Predators' seventh-round pick in the 2009 draft.

Niskala, 26, tallied 19 goals and 25 assists and 81 penalty minutes in 80 regular-season games for the Predators’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, last season. He was also a member of the bronze medal-winning Team Finland at the 2008 World Championships.

Prior to joining the Predators organization for the 2007-08 season, Niskala, 6-foot, 200 pounds, played parts of the previous seven seasons with teams in top European leagues. He led Swedish Elite League defensemen in points with 49 (19G,30A) during the 2006-07 season.

They're really stockpiling the defensemen, huh?

Seems as though Homer is just throwing a bunch of 'em at the wall and hoping a few stick. It's not a bad philosophy. Between the draft and these trades, maybe there are a few decent defensemen in here.

At this point, we're all figuring that Hatcher is no longer in the plans, right?

Would anyone else love to have Brooks Orpik on this team? That guy was a monster in the playoffs, drilling people on every shift. He would be loved in this town.

It seems as though he'd come a lot cheaper than Campbell, maybe for half the price. While he doesn't have Campbell's puck-moving ability, he was creating a lot of turnovers in the playoffs.
