Typically, you wake up and read the papers (or sites) to find that all the columnists are writing the exact same thing. I've always wondered how this happens. Does the team trot out a player and say, "Okay, everyone needs to write a puff piece tomorrow about David Akers was raised by wolves"?
That being said, it's rare when you find yourself reading opposing viewpoints from Philly columnists, but that's exactly what happened yesterday.
I haven't had a chance to see many Flyers games this year (but I did catch the 3rd period of Sunday's win), so I typically rely upon articles and highlights to see how the team is doing. After reading Ed Moran's optimistic column, I suddenly felt like the team is finally in good shape at the right time of year.
Then I read Sam Donnellon's dour piece, and I felt as if the sky were falling.
Knowing the Flyers' recent late-game (not to mention recent late-season) failures, my guess is that Sam is a little more on point than Ed.

Maybe. I mean, statistically, it's beter than 50/50, but they play Pittsburgh and Jersey-- probably the last two teams they'd want to face-- while the Capitals get Florida and Tampa. And you know how badly the NHL will want Crosby vs. Ovechkin in round One...

The Carolina Hurricanes have interest in the Capitals too. If the Canes win tomorrow or if Capitals lose either of their 2 remaining games Hurricanes win the Southeast Division and get 3rd place in conference. If Capitals win both and Canes lose tomorrow Canes are out of the playoffs.

Just further proves what a brutal commissioner Bettman truly is. Ovechkin recently signed a contract that guarantees, barring a trade, he will toil in relative obscurity his entire career. No matter how good the kid is, he's going to get zero press when half his games are against teams in Florida and Atlanta.

Last Friday night all three local teams took a beating, but there is more compelling drama tonight. Informal poll: what is the number one option for your viewing interest this evening.
a. Flyers v Devils
b. Sixers v Hawks
c. Phils v Reds
d. Fuck it, I'm going to Woody's.
I'm thinking Sixers get the most airtime, followed by Phils, with Flyers getting a quick glance here and there.

B. 6ers actually have a shot to move up as high as 4/5 spot with a few wins. Hawks have a chance to make it 10 out of 12 and get into playoffs for the first time since I was in junior high. Big time Playoffs atmosphere tonight.

I'd say
Cold Beer on ice in cooler
Bodoglife - Losing on the ponies
Phils - TV on providing background noise
Sixers - Occasionally checking score
Flyers - Not interested

Tanks for nothing
Murray thinks Pens threw game to set up series with Senators
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, SUN MEDIA
OTTAWA -- The puck hasn't even dropped in their first-round playoff series and Senators coach and GM Bryan Murray has already called out the Penguins for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Murray is convinced the Penguins intentionally lost their final regular-season game to Philadelphia on Sunday so that they could face Ottawa in Round 1 of the post-season rather than the Flyers.
Asked by Sun Media what his thoughts were when he didn't see Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby in the lineup against the Flyers, Murray was quick and to the point. "I knew what was going on," Murray said following the Senators' practice yesterday at Scotiabank Place.
Which was?
"You guys all know: They wanted to play Ottawa," Murray said. "That's fine. It was fairly obvious from the drop of the puck."
While the official word from the Penguins was that Crosby didn't dress for "precautionary" reasons because he has been nursing an injured ankle, the Senators weren't buying it.
Had the Penguins beaten the Flyers, Pittsburgh would have finished No. 1 in the East and played Philadelphia. But judging by the Penguins' performance Sunday, they wanted nothing to do with that matchup.
Sources say the Penguins were also concerned the Flyers might run Crosby because he's hurting.
"You'd have to ask them. I'm not sure," Murray said when pressed on why the Penguins did it. "But the physical nature of the game against the Flyers last Wednesday (a 4-2 win for the Pens) was certainly the first thing that I thought of. In a seven-game series, if you don't like the physical way the Flyers play, you're probably better to go elsewhere."

Anyone goin in Tuesday nite?
Wifey got the boy and I tickets. Would love to meet up with some of you (if anyone cares about the Flyers- it IS Jackie Robinson/Dollar Dog nite over at The Bank the same nite).

I wouldn't care if the Flyers play physical.
Teams should expect such and in turn the stupid penalties they'll commit being physical will create powerplay opputunities.

Get ready to be blown away with the bullshit that Ovechkin gets away with. I saw almost all the Cap's vs. Canes games this season, and the amount of calls that he gets, is so out of hand, it's really embarrassing.
The Flyers need to take a run at him, early. And not some 4th line scrub either.

The Flyers might also try to rattle Ovechkin with big hits, trying to take his focus off the puck. But the forward likes to hit back as much as anyone in the NHL.
Stevens has watched teams try to combat Ovechkin with both skilled lines and their bruisers, and little has worked. Stevens might try Lupul, center Mike Richards and perhaps Patrick Thoresen on a line against Ovechkin.
“I don’t see the physical game bothering him at all,” Stevens said. “There are some things you have to respect in his game. You just can’t try and trade chances with him.”
I haven't seen Ovechkin play a minute since I hardly watch hockey anymore but they are making this guy sound like Superman.
Guess I'll have to watch a few games of the series to see if the Flyers try to fuck him up.

And WELL before ANY games are played- I want to get this off the chest:
The NHL LOVES this guy and he is a rather good guy to market- extremely skilled etc, without the arrogance of Crosby.
Washington apparently is sellin out nightly (is this true? Hard to believe, that market has been belly up for almost a decade I figured- but if even close to true, then thats another feather in this cat's cap).
The guys dynamic to watch.
He is big and can play physical (only saw him vs Flyers but still...)
The NHL wants this guy (I'll call him Drago) to advance. Im ready for the B.S. calls.
Not to mention- anyone catch on TV (was it ESPN? Honestly asking, cant recall where i watched this the other day) but the panel was discussing "Canada's Disdain for the Flyers". It stemmed from 18 out of 20 of the top sports writers not only calling for the Caps to win (Id think it'd be a TAD tougher to call than that) but quotes from some of them-
"This will be the bloodiest series in years; the Flyers will try to maul and manhandle and bully like they did in the 70's...."
1 of the panelists quickly interrupted the other who was readin the quote and stated the obvious- they WOULD NOT do this cos a) its not the 70's and b) that'll KILL their chance to win the game/Series as they'll be sittin in the box.
They went onto discuss how Canada (Elitest Hockey Snobs) all hate Philly for supposedly "Stealing 2 Cups" by just "Beating people up" which is not (entirely) true. PLENTY of talent on those teams. PLENTY.
get ready for the screw job fellas.
