Teams that have sustained runs of dominance (and by that, I mean multiple Stanley Cup victories over a designated time) have one thing in common-- Hall of Fame goaltending.

From the Canadiens teams of yesteryear, to the Islanders/Oilers of the 80s, to Roy's Montreal/Colorado teams and the Brodeur Devils... the only two where this diesn't hold are the early 90s Penguins (had the greatest player of all-time and a sick supporting cast) and late 90s-early 00s Red Wings. And Mike Vernon may get in the Hall of Fame yet.

That's why the Flyers have to seize this opportunity-- they lack themost important ingredient for a long-term, sustained run at the top. What makes the Devils so damn frustrating is that you know they could probably comprise their team of a bunch of journeymen and still contend with Brodeur.

Goalie is more important than the QB, the starting pitcher, or (maybe) a dominant center (which are rare)

Not to take anything away from Biron, but how many posts did Montreal hit in those 5 games?

I don't see what's so wrong with the Flier, it clearly spells out "Dangerous", as opposed to "All".

Flyers hit two posts, Montreal 5. Don't know how many good shots the Flyers missed. Montreal rarely missed good shots but the shot placements weren't always good.

Does hitting the post count as half a goal or something?

Then who cares?

I think the point Nova et al were making was that the Flyers had an element of luck during this series. The Canadiens had an element of zebra luck early on in the series and Price got lucky with some missed, easy open shots.

But I agree, there is a goal between those posts. Gotta get the puck in there.

Sidenote, a friend of mine always celebrated when he nutmegged an opposing player as if he scored a goal. It took him two years and a suspension from the team to understand that while it was hysterical to him it wasn't a team objective.

28 minutes a night of Randy Jones and Jaroslav Modry. I'm a shade below optimistic right now.

Apparently this story broke out in the news a couple hours after a Flyers board mentioned it. For a story this big that's a pretty long time.

Then again, the Philly media was probably trying to figure out what McNabb was having for dinner tonight so this small, unimportant story slipped through the cracks.

And for those of you who don't follow the Flyers regularly, 25+ minutes a night from Modry is like 400 AB's a year from So Taguchi and 30 minutes a night from Kevin Ollie.

Yeah, I get it/know that.

And as for Section- I think HULK who knows his Jedi stuff once backed me out here when I said once im about as non-Jedi mentality as you can get, so your crack is about apt.

They're sunk, realistically guys- just stop.

Its all about more being a fan now and rooting against the impossible, not some false sense of "teams are still evenly matched" crap (Pssst- they werent evenly matched beforehand but it was manageable and I felt Flyers coulda won the series.)

I no longer feel that way.

Do not think this means i wont be watching, or rooting just as hard as before, just sayin- Pens are goin to come away looking to the nat'l media and their own fans as a bigger mismatch for Philly than they shoulda been.

Philly coulda won this series, and now it isnt likely to see 6 games.

This is just terrible.

Chicklet said she read somewhere that the team is revisiting this at the end of the week- can i HOPE that thinners work and he can play in Philly?

A LITTLE CLARKIE GAMESMANSHIP HOPEFULLY>?
God id love that, tho I know inside it aint the case.

Ugh. REALLY took the wind outta my sails headin into the wknd.

Last night the doctor said they'd try to get him back on the ice in three months. The consensus seems to be that no one knows... if the blood thinners are effective, sure, he could go out there and play as soon as Tuesday night. But he'd be doing so w/o doctor's permission and obviously at his own risk... you can imagine the ramifications of playing ice hockey on blood thinners.

I wonder if they don't give Ryan Parent a shot instead of Modry.

I really don't think this locks it for Pittsburgh. It does compromise the Flyers depth to the point that certain guys are going to have to take on very defined roles and sacrifice the "well-rounded" portions of their games. Specifically, Richards and Carter will be forced to take a much more defensive approach vs. the Crosby/Malkin lines... and anytime you put Prospal/Briere/Knuble on the ice vs. those lines you are taking a decided risk. I wouldn't expect much at even strength, scoring-wise, from Richards especially this series. So sxpecial teams just became that much more important-- but the Flyers have a capable powerplay. More than capable. I think they were #2 in the league this year.

But this team already lost its best player (Gagne) three months ago... they know how to deal with these sorts of adjustments on the fly so to speak.

Whereas before I was saying "If the Flyers take one in Pittsburgh this weekend, the Pens are in trouble" it now turns to if the Flyers DON'T take one in Pittsburgh this weekend, turn out the lights. This injury will have a greatetr effect on the later games in the series.
