The Flyers handed the Caps their butts. The Caps have a guy on the team who is probably going to win the MVP title this year...you know, a guy by the name of Alex Ovechkin? The Flyers pretty much shut him down save one game. They got so many questionable calls in their favor and still lost the series. Let's not forget how every "expert" had the Caps blowing the Flyers out.
Then they go to beloved Canada and play the chosen ones. Again, the Flyers were to be swept under the rug by a team that "deserves to win the cup and bring it back home...where it belongs." The Flyers took it to them 4 straight after a questionable call in game one that gives the game to the Habs. Do I really need to mention Kovalev, Koivu, the super brothers Kostitsyn or the wonder-kid...Price? How every "expert" stated the Flyers have no business on the ice with this team?
Now they go and face the second coming of Gretzky and all the garbage calls that will be coming their way.

I thought we already covered the fact that Melrose picked them to win? Man, you might be the Poster Boy for the Philly "Everyone is Against Us" mentality/Conspiracy...

Here's the preview from the Hockey News... they seem to consider the matchups fairly even. Their series prediction, not as much.
Link
Regular Season Record
Pittsburgh – 47-27-8
Philadelphia – 42-29-11
Season Series
Pittsburgh 3-5-0 (23 GF, 28 GA)
Philadelphia 5-3-0 (28 GF, 23 GA)
Leading Scorers vs. Opponent
Pittsburgh – Evgeni Malkin, 15 (6G, 9A); Petr Sykora, 8 (3G, 5A); Sergei Gonchar, 8 (3G, 5A)
Philadelphia – R.J. Umberger 11 (6G, 5A); Joffrey Lupul, 10 (5G, 5A); Mike Richards, 8 (1G, 7A)
2008 Playoff MVP
Pittsburgh – Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins goaltender has been everything he has failed to be to this point in his career. The Penguins have enough offense that they don’t need superhuman goaltending, but Fleury is providing close to that.
Philadelphia – Martin Biron. Really, really wanted to say R.J. Umberger here, but we have to go with Biron in an incredibly close vote. Biron’s play in the second round made the margin of victory much larger than it should have been.
Why They’re Here
Pittsburgh – Unlike last season when the Penguins looked like a deer peering into oncoming headlights in the first round, Pittsburgh’s star players are being difference makers and they have enough of them to carry the team a long way.
Philadelphia – For years, the Flyers searched for a goaltender who could lead them to victory in the playoffs and they’ve finally found one. Their elite players are coming through, but lesser lights such as Umberger and Joffrey Lupul have been terrific.
Special Teams
This could prove to be the difference in the series if the Flyers continue to flirt with disaster in this area of the game. The Flyers have been shorthanded more than any other team in the league by far and if they take too many penalties against the Penguins, they’ll be scorched by one of the best power play units in the league. Edge: Pittsburgh
Forwards
The Penguins are deeper down the middle than any team in the playoffs and in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin they have two of the best players on the planet. But the Flyers are getting such great production from such unlikely sources that it has given them depth up front the Penguins don’t have. Edge: Philadelphia
Defense
You’d think it would be the other way around, with the Penguins having the edge at forward and the Flyers better on defense, but the Penguins much-maligned defense corps has held up quite well so far in the playoffs. They get the edge because they move the puck better than the Flyers do. Edge: Pittsburgh
Goaltending
Both teams have received all-world goaltending from their Quebec-born stoppers through the first two rounds of the playoffs. Biron has proved he has what it takes to be a No. 1 goalie in the NHL and Fleury has proved he can deliver in important games. Edge: Even
Coaching
Let’s face it, neither of these guys is the second coming of Dave King. Both coaches tend not to micromanage their rosters and give their top players the freedom to do what they do best. Michel Therrien, in particular, has really grown as a coach over the years and has done a good job of tightening the Penguins’ game up. Edge: Even
X-Factor
Almost half of Umberger’s 13 goals this season came in his eight games against the Penguins. The Flyers owned the Penguins in their first four matchups of the regular season, but the Penguins took three of the last four.
Prediction
The Flyers have already gone light years further than anyone thought they would this season and while it certainly wouldn’t be a shock to see them give the Penguins a series, it took the Flyers 12 games to get out of the first two rounds and the Penguins just nine. The Penguins are playing with the authority of a team that will seriously challenge for the Stanley Cup. Penguins in five.

I really don't think that Crosby will be the difference in this series. He's an excellent player, but it'll be Malkin and Ryan Malone's performances that make the difference one way or another for Pittsburgh. Well, that and how Gonchar and Ryan Whitney hold up to the forecheck.
87 will get his points, but that's to be expected. I think if he ultimately is the difference-maker in this series, that will mena it's over relatively quickly.

Yeah, kinda happy with that analogy.
GG-
Crosby will get calls, and you have to expect it and be OK with it- he's a superstar.
Be honest;
How many flagrant elbows and dirty shots was Lindros afforded without calls in the playoffs durin his time here?
AAHHHHHHHPLLLLEnty.
Especially, ironically enuff, in that series with the Pens in 97.
While I listened to and still believe what several others with more knowledge than myself stated last series about "Canada's Team"- thats not the case here.
Crosby flops and takes dives. Understood and its pathetic a man of his skill feels the need to still do so.
But there shouldn't be a built in excuse in your central thought process for the series.
I heard Tim Pinachhio say on air last nite that The Flyers will be screwed by the officiating and that the 1st game will tell you everything you need to know. We'll see. He's not a fan, just a beat writer, but he's been around hockey.
The point here is that at this point, just enjoy it, the underdog status and what this team's accomplished so far. Just cos a team has a superstar (or 2 Id say in this case) doesnt mean they won't be beaten (See 97's Legion of "Broom"- F Glenn).
I agree with ENY that Crosby wont be the guy in this series for the Pens, and if he is- lights out early boys.
Hatcher will draw the Crosby assignment and those old wheels will be tested, tho the geezer's held up great to this point and he and Sid have a bit of a history so, Im fine with it.
Stay outta the box without sacrificing your style of play much, and you have a shot Flyers.
Play undisciplined and you're on the golf course next wk.

Switching gears and going backwards, does anyone know how f'ing old Morganti IS?
His Wiki page claims that he first started at the Boston Globe and then went to the AJC to cover the ATLANTA FLAMES. They moved to Calgary in 1980, for heaven's sake. If he is 57 years old then he was covering the Flames when he was 20? WTF?
I could not get his age anywhere I looked.
(As a sidenote, the Flames Wiki page said that they were named after Sherman Burning Atlanta in the Civil War. That seems hard to believe as well, either that or NTFF).

Flyers fans are notorious for bitching and moaning about penalties--it's always been that way.
Sort of like Eagles fans bitching and moaning about the lack of a true #1 WR.
Just the way it is.

Edit:
HOCKEY fans are notorious for bitching and moaning about penalties--it's always been that way. (NOBODY whines more than ironically, those Pens fans, when you're sittin in "the Igloo" for a game. You cannot brush up against a penguin without thousands of cries for a call, arms flailing about, Iron City sloshin everywhere.)
Sort of like Eagles fans bitching and moaning about the << Parking situation, Owners being cheap, McNabb, not spending their allotment under the cap, the top draft pick each year (or lack thereof), Hoagie-Gate, being the target of lazy journalists, their reputation nationwide, the third jersey being black and not the ‘throw back’ from Randall’s day- the ugly bright Kelly green, not being able to park an RV in the lot at the cost of just 1 pkg space despite taking up 7 & the>> lack of a true #1 WR.”
Just the way it is.

They (Fly) bow out in 6 and I'll be disapointed but honestly VERY HAPPY.

Seth
Nobody expected them to get this far so we all should be happy. I get your analogy but if they lose this series now I won't be happy at all or satisfied they made it to the conference finals and lost in 5 / 6 games or whatever. I just feel differently about it. I appreciate what they have accomplished so far but I want and now expect more. Guess I'm being unrealistic and greedy. Want it all.
And I did expect the Eagles to win NFCCG vs. Rams. Especially, when they were up at halftime 17-13. Fkn stiffs. They blew it.

GGB - you could always call him up on IP in the morning and ask him. My guess he is late 40s early 50s.
I found this on the Flames.
They all laughed the day hockey came to Atlanta. It was a sick kind of a laugh for it was not a very funny joke to most hockey people. They saw this as the last rotten board in an already dilapidated house.
Atlanta - a city where football was king - a city where basketball and baseball were themselves barely hanging on (with only minor league baseball seven years earlier) - a city
where hockey was foreign and the only ice rink little used.
When they refernce football being king the must be referring to college football. Can't be the Falcons.

No,
I meant FLYERS fans--which are a very different breed than "hockey" fans.
I'm talking about the South Philly Cuz wearing his Brind'Amour jersey and talking about the game as if he actually ever laced up a pair of skates.--That is a Flyers fan and they bitch and moan about refs every year.
Pens fans are just as clueless--but they aren't real hockey fans either.
I have always followed the Flyers and usually go to 1-2 games per year, watch a good portion of the reg season, get psyched for the playoffs--but for me, watching hockey has been more of an excuse to hang out with my friends and drink beer than it has been for my pure love of the game--90% of flyers fans are just like me, south philly cuz guy included.

Anyway...

I get what section is saying. Even if you become a force in the NHL it's rare that the best team gets to the finals because seeding doesn't mean jack in this league. They might not get here again for a long time.

Actually, this is one thing I will say, I don't think that the Flyers success is all that sustainable, to me they are riding the Prototypical NHL Playoff Success Model, hot goalie and timely scoring from dudes that don't normally score at that pace.
I don't see a big run of dominance coming out of this team, so better grab the ring while it's in sight.

That was mainly my point and not just with the Flyers but with all the home teams. You never know if you’re going to make it back. The Eagles are a prime example.
I just hope the Flyers players realize this as well. The opportunity does not come along that often. Strike while the iron is hot and Biron is on fire right now. Win it now.
I’m expecting a very intense series. It should be an emotional roller coaster ride. So buckle up folks.
