Wait a second, is that the same Barry melrose people here accused of irrationally hating the Flyers? He was the only one to pick them correctly to defeat Montreal?
Hmmm.

The best, is that when you actually discuss this with Seth, and the mechanics of how it takes place, he reduces it to a margin that it almost doesn't exist.

ENY, during his live commentary he repeatedly said that the Canadiens would win.
After game 3 I heard him say he thought the Habs would come back and take it in seven. I agreed with him at the time, to be quite honest. Melrose was hardly alone. Go back in this thread to the start of the playoffs-- the overwhelming consensus on this board was that Montreal was the worst-case matchup for Philly. They proved everyone wrong, but Melrose was hardly out on an island. I think just about every person on this board weighed in at the start of the post-season with similar thoughts.

ENY, he did make the "in 7" comment after game 3 but was also dismissive of the team after game 2. Shit, after game 1 he hardly gave credit to the Flyers at all who did outplay the Habs.
Biron really won game 3 and had a large hand in game 2, but for cripes sake RJ Umberger had 8 goals....give the man his due already. No mention by Melrose. No mention of how well the defense shut down Kovalev or Koivu. Those guys didn't get their usual looks or complements of shots on goal. It still doesn't explain how the Flyers played well in game 1, for sizeable stretches in games 4 and 5. He just didn't give them their due.
I could very well be off on this, but it is the aura of him preferring a Canadian team to win that irritated me. Him picking the Flyers maybe meant he thought they'd win but not that he wanted them to. Very much the apologist for the Canadiens during his commentary or so it seemed to me.
To be honest, given how the Habs dominated the Flyers during the season I thought they wouldn't advance out of the series myself going into it. Particularly how they looked like they held on to win against the Caps heading into that series against a reasonably rested team.

Regular season and post season are apples and oranges.
The sad news of this series will be whomever survives will most likely be too beat up to give the Western Teams much of a fight.
I think we are gonna see some 10 minute penalties in the series along with some game misconducts. Fights that are better than pay per view.

BI,
I know they are completely different. Just saying that the Habs seemed to be much faster than the Flyers during the regular season.
I am looking forward to a rough series that is brutal. I don't think the Stars-Wings are going to be a short series. I think it'll at least go 6. The Wings will not face a severely depleted team like they did with the Avalanche. The Wings let the Wild hang around too long. The Stars have been in some long series.
The Cup is won by the battle of attrition. There will be enough of that in the West such that it won't be so lopsided for the East.

Now you’re talking. You made it this far why not go all the fkn way home.
I don't want to hear.. ...Oh they made it to the Conference finals so whatever happens now is gravy…
Win the Cup. Anything else is unacceptable at this point.
Win 8 games and it is History.
The difference between making a contribution and making a commitment is like eggs and ham for breakfast. The chicken makes a contribution. The pig makes a commitment.
I want players who make a commitment.

Wait- I want the cup, no question, and think they do have a shot to advance here in this round.
But you HAVE to realize that this is a process, and for this team, largely turned over w/in the year, to advance from LAST PLACE in the NHL, and having a roster of guys who for large part hadn't logged a lot of ice time together if at all----
This is absolutely like playin with house money.
And its that kinda attitude that keeps em loose and 1 of the intangibles that I think gives em a shot.

Dude, the Red Wings are killer. They haven't been too tested in their last series. But they aren't invincible. The struggle against in the first round proved that.
Section, I heard that rant by a college coach on ESPN today....funny shit.
I kinda agree with Section on this one, Seth, mainly because its an attitude. That attitude is one that you see with the Lakers, Yankees and Patriots. I guess the knowledge of there being no reason you can't win (all professionals etc) should permeate the locker room. But like, Seth, I think it is an unrealistic expectation.

once again, i am going to post this at a high point, so it doesnt appear to be sour grapes in case this series doesnt go well.
hey, i sure hope they keep proving me wrong as they've done so far in the playoffs but i still think this team is one offensive playmaker and 2 younger defensemen from being a true dominant team.
why ?? cause marty is really who's winning these games for them, although at this point in time, i wont take anything away from what this team as a whole has accomplished.
Homer cant be lulled into a false sense of accomplishment and not make changes. if this kid giroux is the real deal, then he should be here next yr. they need talent, not more heart. the passes arent crisp and they turn the puck over in their own zone too many times. talented stickhandlers will help.
hatcher and smith have had pretty good yrs, but they're bodies will be another yr older next yr. by getting younger at the backline, what the flyers will lose in experience, they'll gain in speed, strength and youthful athleticism.
right now, they have to stick with what got them here and keep playing the same way. next yr, some more tinkering needs to be done.

"leave it to glenn to say the redwings are the best team. do you even watch hockey or do you just blindly support all things deeeetroit?"
Well, let's see. They had the most points in the regular season along with the most goals scored and fewest allowed, by a good margin vs. anyone except the two respective teams that finished 2nd. They lost a couple to Nashville (someone said the Wild above, but they played the Preds) when Hasek let in a few soft, soft goals, but they replaced him with Osgood and have rolled, ROLLED to 6 straight.
Do you even watch hockey or do you just say dumb things?
That said, it's anyone's Cup for the taking at this point.

Just before the draft party, you were kinda downplayin the Wings chances over e mail in a "it certainly looks that way" to EG's question of another 1st round playoff ousting by 'the best team' in hockey.
I agree with you, just sayin, might wanna throttle back on the bravado with the Wings- you had similar bravado all of March with your Tigers.
Wings
Pens
Flyers
Stars
Thats how these teams rank IMO, and really you can interchange the final two spots cos it doesnt matter. The Wings are the team to beat here, no question.

Seth
Ask the players if they feel like they are playing with house money. They feel like they deserve to be where they are this point in the playoffs. Briere made a comment the other day that he was surprised at the Habs comments after that series was over. Flyers are getting no respect from the media or the teams they’ve beaten so far. Nobody thinks they can beat the Pens either.
And when I said it is unacceptable if they don't win it all I meant it is for me. I'm tired of seeing Philly teams make it to the finals and not finish the deal.
83, 93 – Phillies
76, 80, 85, 87, 97 – Flyers
77, 80, 82, 01 – Sixers
01, 02, 03, 04 - Eagles
Tired of waiting for next year. Win this thing this year and have a parade. I may not be around next year.
I would think it would be unacceptable for the players and the whole Flyers organization if they don't win it all. Would it still be a good year, yes, but I would think at this point it would be huge disappointment for the team not to advance.
I didn't expect them to make it this far but now that they have, finish the deal.
Nobody thought the Giants would win the Super Bowl either so it isn't out of the realm of possibilities that the Flyers can win 8 of the next 14 games.
They sucked me in so I’m on the band wagon for them to win it all.
Doc
My rant that I posted was a quote from Freddy “the Fog” Shero. Didn’t see the dude on ESPN. Was thinking about The Fog because I read a quote from his son the other day who is the GM of the Pens.
My favorite Shero quote - Win together today, and we walk together forever

It's not bravado, it's a response to a dumb post above. Saying the Flyers had just ousted the best team in Hockey when the President's Trophy winner along with the leader in GF and GA is still playing is just retarded. It speaks nothing to what happens from here on out.
And it's now clear to me that you've confused the National Media's March obsession with the Tigers with my reasonably optimistic outlook for them, albeit in a tough American League with a number of good teams.

Section-
I guess im not being clear----
FOR US, THE FANS- its like playin with house money.
They (Fly) bow out in 6 and I'll be disapointed but honestly VERY HAPPY.
That kinda feeling never occurred when the Birds lost to TB at home in the NFCCG or Carolina, as IMO then they were EXPECTED To make that next step.
This has more of a "NFCCG @ Rams" feel to it than those other games, how's that?
I fully expect the players to BELIEVE and EXPECT to win this series, and Im not sure they cant.
